Comporta is a Portuguese municipality belonging to the Alcácer do Sal district, with an area of 150.5 km² and 1268 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 8.4 inhabitants / km².

The place is directly on a branch of the Sado and has an Atlantic beach 2 kilometers away. The population of Comporta lives from tourism, which has developed strongly in recent years, and agriculture. In the area, rice is grown extensively in the wetlands of the Sado. There are also some salt pans for sea salt extraction .

Natural areas

Comporta borders on the one hand on the Tróia peninsula and on the other hand with the Sado Natural Park, the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado , an area of 23,160 hectares of wetlands in the river delta . Rice cultivation, fishing and salt extraction are traditionally practiced here. The nature reserve became famous for the occurrence of freshwater dolphins that live in the Sado Delta. In addition to large numbers of storks that search the banks of the nature reserve and the rice fields for frogs, there are around 100 rare and protected bird species. For several years there has also been a closed settlement for holiday guests in Comporta. The nearby beach (Ilha de Arroz) is an attraction and you have a wonderful view of the coast of Setúbal and the Serra da Arrábida.

history

The first verifiable inhabitants of the area around Carvalhal and Comporta were Celts in the Stone Age . They had founded various settlements along the Rio Sado and traces of their cult and burial sites reach far into the hinterland. The Roman Empire also left its mark on the area. The seaport and fish processing site on the Tróia peninsula across from Cetóbriga should be mentioned here in particular . After the Christian conquest in the 12th century, the lands to the left of the Sado fell to the noble house of the Infantados. It was not until 1836, following the liberal revolution in Portugal, that the area was freely sold and some of the land went into the private ownership of Portugal's largest banking family, Espírito Santo , (see Herdade de Comporta ).

tourism

Since the 1990s there has been a lively tourism in the Comporta and Carvalhal area . Now that the holiday projects on the nearby Tróia peninsula have been completed, construction is now shifting to the sand dunes and pine forest in this area. The sale of two large lots of Herdade de Comporta was completed in 2018. The current projects (ADT2 and ADT3) relate to 365 and 551 hectares, for which the districts of Alcácer do Sal and Grândola have already submitted development plans. These plans include zones for luxury hotels, holiday villages / apartments and golf courses with the maximum number of 11,911 beds. The projects will destroy large parts of the previously intact dune landscape and the pine forest that is supposed to secure these dunes. The consequences are therefore unpredictable for the coastal area around Comporta. The foreseeable increase in drinking water consumption due to the golf course and pools will further reduce both the low groundwater level in this area.

Sports

In July 2011 the European Championships for young jumpers took place in Comporta.
