Odemira is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 26,066 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Odemira belongs to the Alentejo Littoral and the district of Beja .

geography

Odemira is located about 100 km southwest of the district capital Beja , and is about 10 km east of the Atlantic coast. The region's coastal area is crossed by the Mira River and is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina .

history

Finds and excavations prove a settlement of the place before the arrival of the Romans . The Moors conquered the area from the early 8th century and built fortifications here. In the course of the Reconquista , the Kingdom of Portugal came into being in 1166 . In 1256 Odemira received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time . In 1265 the place received new fortifications, which King D Dinis had expanded in 1319 . In 1510 King Manuel I renewed the town charter . In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg , the Odemira district was significantly expanded in the middle of the 19th century.

Culture, sights and regular events

The place is on the edge of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina , a nature reserve that stretches along the entire southwestern Portuguese coast. Hiking trails are laid out.

The Sudoeste Festival has been held in the municipality of Zambujeira do Mar since 1996, attracting tens of thousands of guests from all over the world. In 2012 from August 1st to 5th, Ben Harper , Eddie Vedder , David Guetta , The Roots , Thievery Corporation , The Vaccines and many more were guests.

The architectural monuments include various community cemeteries, bridges, historical public buildings and private houses, old fountains, the Farol do Cabo Sardão lighthouse , wind and water mills, and a variety of sacred buildings . Some historic town centers are also listed as a whole, such as that of Odemira itself.

The Cineteatro Camacho Costa with its theatrical performances, cinema programs and specialist conferences, the multifaceted municipal library Biblioteca Municipal , and the cultural centers of the municipalities are the main places of cultural life in the district.

Odemira is the administrative seat of a district of the same name and part of the Alentejo Litoral ; this is a sub-region in Portugal . In terms of area, it is the largest district in Portugal . It is bordered to the north by the counties of Sines and Santiago do Cacém , to the east by the county of Ourique , to the south by Monchique , Silves and Aljezur , and to the west is the Atlantic Ocean.

With the regional reform in September 2013 , several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 17 to 14.

traffic

The Linha do Sul railway runs through Odemira County, with several stops. The national roads N123 and N263 cross Odemira and connect the district to IC1 37 km away and the A2 motorway about 60 km away .

Odemira is integrated into the national bus network of Rede Expressos .
