history

Colos was first mentioned in writing in 1383. On June 26, 1499 Colos received city rights. At that time the community was still part of the Sines district . In 1836 Colos was assigned to the district of Vila Nova de Milfontes and later, after this district was dissolved, Cercal do Alentejo and it was not until 1855 that the area of ​​responsibility changed to the district of Odemira . Colos, a city in the Alentejo with 500 years of history, celebrated its birthday in 1999.

A well-known historical figure of Colos was the air commander Brito Pais, one of the first air pioneers in Portugal who, together with Sarmento de Beires, carried out the first direct flight from Portugal to Macau in 1924 , which took off from Vila Nova de Milfontes .
