Sao Teotónio Church

São Teotónio is a small town ( Vila ) and municipality on the coast of the Portuguese region of Alentejo .

history

The mention of a local church from 1381 is the oldest document from the municipality. As Pé do Serro or Pé da Serra , the place was recorded in 1532 as a town with 22 families. It has been an independent municipality since the end of the 16th century. The local stay of the Archbishop of Évora, Teotónio de Bragança (1530–1602), who also encouraged the construction of the parish church, probably contributed significantly to this.

Culture and sights

The entire coast of the municipality is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina National Park and is known for its beauty.

São Teotónio is particularly famous for its festivals in June, which are dedicated to the saints of the church. The streets of the town are then decorated with paper flowers (São Pedro). At the climax of the festival, one drives with decorated carriages to the nearby coastal town of Zambujeira do Mar to take a cleansing bath.

Carvalhal Beach

According to a legend, Saint Teotonius ( Portuguese : São Teotónio, 1082–1162) came through the place, which was on Moorish territory at that time, and converted its inhabitants to the Christian faith. He was the first Portuguese saint .
