Zambujeira do Mar is a village and former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Odemira district on the western Atlantic coast in Portugal with a total area of 41 km² and 911 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) and a population density of 22.2 inhabitants per km².
geography
Zambujeira do Mar is located about 6 km west of São Teotónio and 13 km southwest of Odemira .
history
The parish was only created in 1989, when it split from the parish of São Teotónio .
In view of the budget problems in Portugal as a result of the international banking crisis , the dissolution of the municipality has been discussed since 2012. Resistance formed against this on site. In the course of the administrative reorganization in Portugal , the municipality was finally re-incorporated into the municipality of São Teotónio on September 29, 2013.
Culture and sights
The " Sudoeste Festival ", one of the largest rock festivals in Portugal, has been taking place in the municipality since 1996 . In 2012, from August 1st to 5th, Ben Harper , Eddie Vedder , David Guetta , The Roots , Thievery Corporation , The Vaccines u. v. a. to guest.
The coast around the village is part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina National Park and consists of steep rocky cliffs and small sandy beaches at places where the rivers run into the sea. Outside of the tourist season, this area is deserted. In addition to the beach below the city, there are the beaches Alteirinhos, Nossa Senhora, Arquinha, Carvalhal and Tonel. South of Zambujeira is Praia dos Alteirinhos, where nudism is authorized at the southern end of the beach .
The small fishing church Capela da Nossa Senhora do Mar is a listed building.
economy
Tourism plays a major role, in addition to the seasonal beach holiday and the annual festival, tourism rural in particular has grown in importance in recent years. Agriculture, fish farming and fishing are also important sources of income in this area. The municipality has four small harbors or, better, landing areas for fishing boats.
