Vidigueira is a small town (Vila) in Portugal with 2959 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Vidigueira is considered one of the agricultural centers of the Alentejo . In addition to olives and their processing into oil, excellent wines are also produced here. Vidigueira is on the Alentejo Wine Route.
history
The Roman archaeological site of São Cucufate near Vila de Frades is located in the immediate vicinity of Vidigueira . Roman nobles lived here around 400 BC. Started to create a stately farm with bath house and chapel.
The current community was in the reign of D.Afonsos III. created in the middle of the 13th century and as part of the settlement policy after the conclusion of the Reconquista . Vidigueira was first mentioned in documents in 1255 as a still insignificant place. The area was bequeathed to the knight Nuno Álvares Pereira in 1385 in recognition of his contribution to the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal in the revolution of 1383 . Under the reign of D. Manuel I , the area fell back to the Crown. In 1519 Vidigueira received its first city rights and Vasco da Gama became Count of Vidigueira ( Primeiro Conde da Vidigueira ).
economy
Vidigueira is known nationwide for the production of good wine and olive oil. In recent years the quality of these products has been further increased by the local cooperative (founded in 1957). In 2006 and 2007 the new olive oil product "Relíquia da Vidigueira" won national prizes. In the area of wine marketing, the Navegantes brand wines are now known and loved across the country. At the annual event Pão e Laranjas ( bread and oranges ) the agricultural products of the area are shown and offered. The rural tourism ( rural tourism ) also plays a growing role in Vidigueira for some time. The district administration advertises the region on the web. Vidigueira is also the name of a wine-growing sub-region in the Alentejo.

Vidigueira is the seat of a district of the same name ( concelho ) in the Beja district . On June 30, 2011 the district had 5932 inhabitants on an area of 316.6 km².
