Philip Anthony "Wizzö" Campbell (born May 7, 1961 in Pontypridd , Wales ) is a British guitarist . He was a member of the metal band Motörhead from 1983 until its dissolution in December 2015 .

Life

Inspired by Jimi Hendrix , Black Sabbath , Jimmy Page , Michael Schenker and Todd Rundgren , he started playing guitar at the age of ten. When he was thirteen he played in a semi-professional cabaret group in South Wales . After years of playing cheap guitars, he bought his first Gibson Les Paul electric guitar for a New Year sale in 1978 , which was later stolen from him. In 1979 he formed the band Persian Risk and released two albums with the group.

Five years later, Campbell got the job of guitarist at Motörhead after Brian Robertson left the group. Lemmy Kilmister had originally planned to employ only one guitarist, but ultimately decided on two candidates: In addition to Campbell, Michael "Würzel" Burston joined. Burston left the group in 1995; until the end, "Wizzö", as Campbell is also called, was Motörhead's only guitarist. At the end of December 2015, Motörhead broke up after the surprising death of front man Lemmy Kilmister.

Phil Campbell played several guitars from different manufacturers at Motörhead. B. Gibson ( Les Paul , Firebird , ES-125), electric guitars made to his specifications from the brand Lag in the style of the Gibson Explorer model and guitars from the Framus brand .

Since 2013 Phil Campbell has a new side project called Phil Campbell's All Stars Band , in which members of Straight Lines , The People the Poet , Dopamine and Attack! Attack! play along. This project became the band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons , who debuted in 2018 with the album The Age of Absurdity . The album won the Best Debut Album category at the 2018 Metal Hammer Awards .

After Motörhead had to cancel their appearance at Wacken in 2013, he acted as guest guitarist in Doro Pesch's performance of the Judas Priest cover Breaking the Law . He also had a guest appearance at the Wacken concert by the band Ugly Kid Joe . On October 25, 2019, Phil Campbell released his solo album Old Lions Still Roar , on which Rob Halford , Alice Cooper and Dee Snider can be heard as guests . The by radio station Planet Rock awarded Music Prize The Rocks 2020 was Old Lions Still Roar in the category Best British Album and These Old Boots nominated for best British single.
