Mikkey Dee (born Micael Kiriakos Delaoglou in Gothenburg on October 31, 1963 ) is a Swedish drummer and was a member of Motörhead from 1992 until they split up in December 2015 . Since 2016 he has been the drummer for the band Scorpions .

biography

Dee was born in Gothenburg in 1963 and is of Greek descent. After starting his musical career in the local band Nadir, he moved to Copenhagen in 1985 to play with Geisha; there he joined the band of King Diamond . After the albums Abigail and Them , he left the group again to join Don Dokken , but played the album Conspiracy as a studio musician . He was followed by Snowy Shaw , for whom Dee was a musical role model, as a drummer.

In 1992 he became a member of Motörhead at the request of Lemmy Kilmister , who had wanted to win him as a drummer since 1985. Since then, Dee has been an integral part of the group. In 2011 he took part in the Swedish jungle camp in Malaysia and was eliminated in the 15th episode. Since he had not notified the Motörhead management of his participation, a short-term Motörhead tour had to begin without him. In the first gigs he was then represented by Matt Sorum (formerly Guns N 'Roses ). Since January 2014 he has also played in the band Nordic Beast, which he founded with John Norum ( Europe , guitar), Hal Patino (King Diamond, bass), Åge Sten Nilsen ( wig wam , vocals) and Mic Michaeli (Europe, keyboards) Has.

When Lemmy Kilmister died unexpectedly on December 28, 2015, Dee announced the breakup of Motörhead. In January 2016, the Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy signed Mikkey Dee as the drummer for the live performances planned for summer 2016 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the death of the band's founder Phil Lynott . However, this commitment was dashed again shortly afterwards. Mikkey Dee stated on the band's website that he could not play the six concerts.

On April 28, 2016, it was announced that Dee would replace the sick James Kottak on the US tour of the Scorpions . Five months later in September, Dee became an official member of the band.

Drums and other instruments

Dee is endorser for Sonor - drums , Paiste - pool and Wincent drumsticks; his drumming is characterized by distinctive double bass drum notes throughout. Dee names Ian Paice , Neil Peart , Steve Smith and Buddy Rich as musical influences. Dee plays acoustic rhythm guitar on Whorehouse Blues and the acoustic version of Ace of Spades recorded for a French beer advert and percussion instruments on Sacrifice .

Trivia

Dee was regularly introduced by Lemmy Kilmister as "The best drummer in the world: Mikkey Dee" at Motörhead appearances . King Diamond and Snowy Shaw also gave him the same title. Dee is a fan of the Swedish ice hockey team Frölunda HC from Gothenburg.
