John Norum
John Terry Norum (born February 23, 1964 in Vardø , Norway ) is a Swedish guitarist in the Swedish hard rock band Europe , which he founded in 1979 with singer Joey Tempest .
Career
Norum and Tempest grew up in Upplands Väsby in Stockholm County . Norum played on the first three European albums. In November 1986 he left the band due to artistic differences. He was dissatisfied with the keyboard-heavy production of The Final Countdown album , and with the band's new, commercial hairspray metal image.
His first solo album, Total Control , was released in 1987. It contained a. a. the Vinnie Vincent- written title Back on the Streets , which was released in 1986 by Vincent's band Vinnie Vincent Invasion on their debut album . Since then, Norum has released numerous other studio and live albums.
Dokken
When Dokken split up for the first time in 1988 and Don Dokken put together a new band, Norum accepted the offer to play for him. For legal reasons Don Dokken could no longer use the old band name and decided to continue under his own name. The Don-Dokken- Band consisted of Norum, the ex-Watchtower guitarist Billy White, the former Accept bassist Peter Baltes and the ex- King Diamond drummer Mikkey Dee . The 1990 album Up from the Ashes reached 50th place in the US charts and was the only one of the band. After a tour of Japan, the musicians separated again.
In 2001 and 2002 Norum worked again for Don Dokken, but this time as a member of the band Dokken, where he replaced Reb Beach and recorded the album Long Way Home with the band . During the following tour, Norum injured his arm and had to cancel the concert tour. He was replaced by Alex DeRosso.
UFO
In 1995 Norum replaced Michael Schenker at UFO , but there was no fruitful collaboration because Schenker prevented the band from using the name UFO for contractual reasons .
Europe reunion
Since the reunion of Europe in 2003, Norum has been a member of the band again and in the following years recorded the albums Start From The Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Almost Unplugged (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009) with them ) and Bag of Bones (2012), "War of Kings" (2015). But he is still active as a solo artist and released the blues album Play Yard Blues in 2010 .
Nordic Beast
From January 2014 he will go on tour with his colleague Mic Michaeli and his ex-colleague Mikkey Dee under the name Nordic Beast . Other members are Hal Patino ( King Diamond , Bass) and Åge Sten Nilsen ( Wig Wam , vocals).
Private
Norum lives in Sweden in summer and in Los Angeles / California in winter . He was married to guitarist and singer Michelle Meldrum-Norum from 1995 until her death . She was also a guitarist and played in the band Meldrum . From his late wife, Norum has a son named Jake Thomas , who was born in October 2004. His sister is the pop singer Tone Norum .
