Europe had comparatively great success with the album Last Look at Eden in 2009 ; the album reached number one in Sweden, number 29 in Switzerland and number 31 in the German music charts . The live album Live! At Shepherd's Bush, London , which was recorded on February 19, 2011 in the Shepherd's Bush Empire, was successful and contained many well-known titles and a tribute to Gary Moore as well as the song Doghouse , which was recorded for the first time in a studio version for Bag of Bones .

Work on the new album began on 3 October 2011 at Atlantis Studio in Stockholm, the "complete with technology from the sixties and seventies was armed." Producer of the album was Kevin Shirley , who in his own words, "has long been an admirer" of Group and wanted to help them record their "most explosive album to date". Some of the recorded titles were created while working in the studio, were then rehearsed together and then recorded. The group finished their recordings on October 27, 2011. Kevin Shirley then worked on the sound mix and had various guest musicians record their contributions. Anton Fig contributed some percussion elements , Joe Bonamassa recorded a slide guitar track for a song at the request of the group .

In January 2012, a few more overdubs were recorded before producer Shirley started the final mixing of the album in his studio. The guitar overdubs were recorded in the Playyard Studio in Stockholm. Shortly before the work was finished, the group decided to record another track for the album. The recordings took place on February 13, 2012. Audio samples of each track on the album have been available on the John Norum website since March 18, 2012 .

A photo session for the booklet of the album and the upcoming advertising took place on February 8, 2012, the photographer was Fredrik Etoall. The cover was designed by Ulf Lundén, who was also responsible for the cover of the album Hisingen Blues by the Swedish band Graveyard .

Thomas Zimmer wrote for ROCKS magazine that on the album “the classic hard rock of the seventies consistently celebrated a happy resurrection like never before”. The result is "not original, but stupidly happy". In order to “avoid any misunderstandings”, start the album “right away with the sharp-edged number” Riches to Rags. Zimmer recognizes parallels to John Bonham in Ian Haugland's drumming and writes that guitarist Norum fired “a well-thought-out solo” that was “short, quick and to the point”, and thus set “the scent mark for the rest of the disc”. The pre-released single Not Supposed to Sing the Blues describes Zimmer as the "anchor of the album"; the piece contained "simply everything: a heavy mid-tempo riff between Purple and Sabbath , an oriental Zeppelin - Bridge as a gangway to a high-melodic chorus, then on again schmurgelndes, gurgling, wah-wah-furious Norum solo, and Joey Tempest at the height of his art. ”The“ autobiographical text ”refers to“ Led Zep and AC / DC ”and asks whether“ someone like him (Tempest) can sing the blues? ”Zimmer praises himself,“ at the latest with My Woman My Friend and his broadly staged melancholy should answer the question. "He describes" casual and effective guitar licks ", heating from below (as on the whole record)" the most porky pig organ a Mic Michaelmas is capable of. "A ballad contains that Album with Bring it all Home too. One should compare “this title with Carrie ” (from the album The Final Countdown ), then one knows “what a musical maturation process” is.

In the same issue, however, the author Alexander Kolbe noted in an article on the album that the band “unfortunately suffered a bad habit of the present day: In the course of the so-called» Loudness War «” they had “become the victim of a too loud mastering , something in connection with Shirley's already not optimal mix for a dull, undifferentiated sound image. That takes "for example the stylish organ sounds of Mic Michaeli in pieces like Demon Head or My Woman My Friend some of their effect."
