Anton Fig (born August 8, 1952 in Cape Town ) is an American rock and jazz drummer.

Life

Early career

Fig started playing the drums at the age of four. He performed in South African rock bands before moving to Boston , where he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music until 1975 . In 1976 he went to New York , where he worked as a freelance musician.

He works with Bob Dylan , BB King , Peter Frampton , Joan Armatrading , Cyndi Lauper , Link Wray , John Waite , Robert Gordon , Joe Bonamassa , Beth Hart and the band Kix , among others . He plays the drums on the Kiss albums Dynasty (1979) and Unmasked (1980).

Fig was a member of the band Spider , played on the 1980 and 1981 releases. He played with Shanghai on the 1982 release with producer Beau Hill and song composer Holly Knight .

In 1987 he was involved in the solo project of Ace Frehley, the former lead guitarist of Kiss , as a member of his band Frehley's Comet . He played on the album of the same name , but left the group after the end of the subsequent tour in order to devote himself to his obligations at CBS.

David Letterman

Since 1986 he has been a member of the World's Most Dangerous Band , which accompanied the NBC show Late Night with David Letterman . When the show moved to CBS in 1993 , the band (now reinforced by a brass section) became known as the CBS Orchestra , which acts as the band of the Late Show with David Letterman and the house band of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . In this capacity he has appeared with musicians such as Miles Davis , James Brown , Bruce Springsteen , Steve Winwood , Bonnie Raitt and Tony Bennett . When Paul Shaffer was not there as the band leader of the CBS band, Fig took over that role.

At the closing ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , the orchestra accompanied Stevie Wonder , Faith Hill , Little Richard and BB King; at the Concert for New York City 2001 David Bowie , Mick Jagger and Keith Richards , Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy , Macy Gray and James Taylor . The band also supported Al Green , Gloria Estefan , * NSYNC and Eric Clapton on VH1's Save the Music concert in the White House .

Fig also starred in some of the show's skits during this time, including the recurring gag "Anton Fig's Guess The Expiration Date", in which Fig was blindfolded and fed food and the expiration date of the food should guess at the taste.

other projects

In 1996, Fig released an instructional video for drummers entitled In the Groove , as a book entitled Late Night Drumming . In 2002 his album Figments was released , on which Richie Havens , Brian Wilson , Ivan Neville , Sebastian Bach , Ace Frehley , Al Kooper , Chris Spedding , Donald Dunn , Blondie Chaplin , Paul Shaffer , Chris Botti , Randy Brecker and Richard Bona participated.

In some of the other recordings that Fig has made, he worked with Bob Dylan , Mick Jagger , Cyndi Lauper , Madonna , Gary Moore , Shanghai, Ace Frehley, Joan Armatrading , Rosanne Cash , Joe Cocker , John Phillips , Warren Zevon , Sebastian Bach , Oz Noy, Jed Davis , Joe Satriani , Paul Butterfield , R. "Guitar" Prasanna, and Chris Spedding.

As a freelance drummer, Fig performed live with Paul Simon , Booker T. & the MG's , the Thompson Twins at the Live Aid concert, and with Jim Keltner at the concert for Bob Dylan's 30th birthday.

In 2006, Fig starred on Blackmore's Night's The Village Lanterne album . In 2007 he worked with Joe Bonamassa on Joe's Sloe Gin album, in 2009 on his Ballad of John Henry album and in 2014 on Different Shades of Blue . On May 4, 2009, Fig joined Joe Bonamassa's band for their first appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where Eric Clapton had a guest appearance. A DVD of this concert has been released. Fig also took part in Ace Frehley's album Anomaly (September 2009). In November 2015 he went on tour with Joe Bonamassa.
