Joan Armatrading
Joan Armatrading (born December 9, 1950 in Basseterre , Saint Kitts ), grew up in Birmingham , England , is a British singer-songwriter .
Life and music
Her music moves stylistically between R&B , rock and folk . Some of her singles became hits in the UK, including Love & Affection, Me Myself, I and Drop the Pilot. Her 2007 production Into the Blues reached number 1 on the US Billboard Blues Charts.
Her debut album Whatever's for Us, released in 1972, was not yet a great success. After some difficulties with her record company Cube Records , she succeeded in 1974 in collaboration with producer and musician Pete Gage (ex- Vinegar-Joe ) to switch to A&M Records , where they recorded Armatrading's second album Back to the Night in 1975 . For this label Joan Armatrading released 15 albums until 1992. She wrote and interpreted the title song Flight of the Wild Geese for the war film Die Wildgänsekommen, produced in 1977 . Over the decades she has combined a wide variety of musical styles, including jazz and reggae, and has so far been nominated for a Grammy three times .
She is the patroness of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and has been honored there since 2001 as a "Companion".
She has been married to her partner Maggie Butler since May 2011 . In addition, Armatrading is socially committed as a board member of the Camfeld Foundation , which is committed to the education of girls in Sub-Saharan Africa .
