Anomaly is the third solo album by the American guitarist Ace Frehley . As a member of Kiss, he had released a successful solo album in 1978, after leaving the band in 1982 he founded the group Frehley's Comet together with bassist John Regan and released two studio albums and one live album . In 1989 he released another solo album, Trouble Walkin ' .

History of origin

When Kiss Unplugged was recorded in 1995, the founding members of the group had stood together on stage for the first time since 1980, although Peter Criss and Ace Frehley were only guests of the then current cast of Kiss. As a result, however, there were negotiations about a comeback of the original line-up, Criss and Frehley got back into Kiss. Between 1996 and 2002 Frehley recorded the album Psycho Circus with Kiss and completed three tours before leaving the group in 2002 after the Farewell Tour . In the following years Frehley hardly appeared in public. In 2006 he overcame his alcohol and drug addiction , and in 2007 he began recording for Anomaly .

Frehley stated in interviews that he was musically guided primarily by his solo album, published in 1978. He first worked with Pro Tools , a digital recording process.

Frehley played a large part of the instruments himself. He recorded the bass , rhythm, lead and acoustic guitars on individual tracks , and he also played the guitar synthesizers used . He also designed the album cover and its layout.

Other musicians who contributed to the album were drummers Scot Coogan, Brian Tichy and Anton Fig , bassist Anthony Esposito ( Lynch Mob ), and guitarist Derrek Hawkins. The singer Meat Loaf's daughter , Pearl Aday , as well as Kari Kimmel, Scot Coogan and co-producer Marti Frederiksen contributed backing vocals .

As on the debut album of his band Frehley's Comet ( Rock Soldiers ), Frehley also processed autobiographical topics on Anomaly . The song A Little Below the Angels deals with Frehley's alcohol addiction, its overcoming and his sober condition.

reception

Anomaly was released on October 27, 2009 and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 . The album was also accepted by the critics.

  • Rocks wrote: “The two instrumentals› Space Bear ‹and the fourth part of› Fractured ‹, entitled› Fractured Quantum ‹prove what a great guitarist he still is. Not an outstanding comeback, but rock solid. "
  • Stringworks.ch commented: “Overall, Ace Frehley does a solid job with Anomaly. Frehley can convince with his guitar work. However, the songs are partly lacking in flavor and independence. For fans of classic hard rock elements from the 70s / 80s, it is still a worthwhile record. "
  • Metal-District.de said: "The masterpiece from 1978 will not be attacked, but› Anomaly ‹can definitely keep up with the releases of the 80s."
  • Metal Hammer stated that Frehley shows “nothing extraterrestrial or abnormal” on Anomaly , but rather tries “for example in a new edition of Fox On The Run, the absolute no-go for semi-professional top 40 bands,” and “otherwise indulges in artistic trivialities . "The album is" not necessarily bad, but at most a must for Kiss disciples. "
