A comeback (from comeback for "[the] return", "return" or [literally the] "return") is the return of a public figure , style or fashion to the center of public attention.

The term is mainly used in politics, sports, and pop music . It is a noun from verb ( come ) and adverb ( back ). Another possible spelling is "Come-back". In the case of a band reunification, it is also referred to as a reunion . In sport, one also speaks of a comeback when the party that has been defeated until then or for a long time makes a turn to victory within the game.

In the K-Pop industry, people talk about a comeback as soon as pop musicians release a new album, regardless of the period between two albums. The first appearance on a music show to promote the new album is called the Comeback Stage .

Well-known comebacks had for example

  • the boxer Muhammad Ali after a forced three-year break from 1967 to 1970
  • the racing driver Michael Schumacher after a three-year break from 2006 to 2009
  • the singer Yusuf Islam , who was previously successful as Cat Stevens and from 1978 to 1995 did not publish any music
  • the pop group Take That , whose members separated after Robbie Williams left in 1996 and have been performing together again since 2006
  • the singer Johnny Cash , who, after a long phase of relative artistic and commercial insignificance, started making successful records with producer Rick Rubin from 1994 onwards
  • the pop singer Britney Spears with her comeback in autumn 2008 after her breakdowns in 2007 and in spring 2008 respectively
  • the singer Jennifer Lopez in the spring of 2011 after a three-year hiatus
