Rick Rubin (* 10. March 1963 as Frederick Jay Rubin on Long Iceland , New York ) is an American music producer . In the early 1980s he played guitar in the New York hardcore band The Pricks. In 1984 he founded the music label Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons while still a student at the University of New York . Starting with hip-hop , he soon started producing music in other styles too. After a dispute with Simmons, he founded his own label "Def American" in 1986, which was included in American Recordings in 1993 was renamed.

Rubin is generally considered to be one of the most influential and respected producers of the present, and in 2007 he was even described on MTV as the “ most important producer of the last twenty years ”.

Rubin hit negative headlines and financial distress in 1995 when musician Genesis P-Orridge ( Throbbing Gristle , Psychic TV ) was seriously injured in a fire at his home . P-Orridge sued for pain and suffering because he suffered from restricted mobility for several years due to the burn injuries.

Since May 2007 Rubin has been co-head of the Sony / BMG label Columbia Records . His vocation is understood, among other things, as a sign of the rethinking with which the music industry wants to save itself from the crisis. Rubin advocates a new form of music marketing in the form of a subscription model.

In 2006 and 2008 Rubin was awarded a Grammy in the “Producer of the Year” category.

The US cable broadcaster Showtime announced a documentary about Rick Rubin in January 2019. A preview version of the film, titled Shangri-la, was premiered at SXSW in March 2019. Was directed by this Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg .
