Seasons in the Abyss is the fifth studio album by the Californian thrash metal band Slayer . It was released in 1990 by Rick Rubin's label Def American .
Seasons in the Abyss was released on October 9, 1990 in the US and reached number 40 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Slayers thus achieved the highest chart price to date. In 1992 the band received a gold record for more than 500,000 copies sold in the United States.
To record the video for the title song, the band traveled to Egypt especially to film at the pyramids.
Dead Skin Mask
The song Dead Skin Mask (translated: 'Mask made of dead skin') was written by Tom Araya on a tour and is about the deeds of the serial killer Ed Gein . Araya was inspired by reading the book Deviant , in which the life of the murderer was described. He is said to have made masks from the skin of his victims and danced around with them at night.
Cover
The cover was designed by the artist Larry Caroll and shows a skull- like face with upright and inverted crosses on the forehead. Skulls and crosses fall out of the mouth into a cross-shaped grave, which is surrounded by four gravestones bearing human skeletons .
reception
The album was also received very positively by the critics, as Slayer with the good production by Rick Rubin fully concentrated on his own abilities without experimentation. The video for the opener War Ensemble earned Slayer the biggest airplay ever on MTV .
In the 44th issue of the genre magazine Rock Hard , this album was named record of the month with a grade point average of 9.33 out of 10 points. Thomas Kupfer writes in his review: " To describe the song material as a mixture of ' Reign in Blood ' in terms of uncompromising attitude and ' South of Heaven ' in terms of controlled aggressiveness hits the nail on the head."
