Jonathan Dette (born April 19, 1970 in San Diego ) is an American drummer . He is a member of the band Impellitteri and previously played in the bands Slayer , Testament and Meshiaak, among others .

Career

Inspired by the Anthrax album Fistful of Metal , Dette, who grew up in Encinitas , started playing drums at the age of 14. He graduated from high school in 1988 and moved to Hollywood to study at the Musicians Institute . In 1990 he formed the band Apocalypse before joining EvilDead in 1993. With this band, however, he only recorded the demo terror released in 1994 . In the same year he took over the position of drummer at Testament from John Tempesta , where he can be heard on the live album Live at the Fillmore . Dette also made a small appearance with the band in the movie Strange Days .

In 1995 Dette left Testament again and joined Slayer. He played numerous concerts with the band and can be seen in the music video for the song I Hate You . When Slayer began songwriting for their album Diabolus in Musica , Dette was fired due to creative differences and was replaced by his predecessor Paul Bostaph . Dette returned to Testament, but had to leave the band after an argument with singer Chuck Billy . With the EvilDead follow-up band Terror , Dette recorded the album Hijos de los Cometas in 1997 , but was not mentioned when it was released. He then worked in the management of an industrial company. Dette played briefly in bands like Pushed and HavocHate and worked with Stewart Copeland . In 2011 he joined the band Killing Machine and played some concerts for the band Heathen as a replacement for Darren Minter.

In November 2012, Dette helped the band Anthrax on their European tour, as their drummer Charlie Benante was unable to attend for personal reasons. On February 22, 2013, Slayer announced that Dette would replace Dave Lombardo on the upcoming Australian tour due to financial conflict. In addition, Dette helped out with the band Heathen on their European tour in the summer of 2013. He had other appearances as a guest drummer with Iced Earth and Impellitteri. In 2015 Dette became a permanent member of Impellitteri and the Australian band Meshiaak. With the latter he released the debut album Alliance of Thieves a year later . In May 2017, Meshiaak separated from Dette because it was not possible to rehearse due to the great distance between Australia and the USA.
