Eternal Pyre is an EP by the US thrash metal band Slayer . It was released on American Recordings on June 6, 2006 . It was initially limited to 1000, later to 5000 copies. The EP preceded the album Christ Illusion . This also contains the song Cult , as is the case on the EP . It was sold through a chain store in the USA and was available in Germany , Finland and Sweden from June 23, 2006. The EP consists of an audio track and two music videos.

Creation and publication

Christ Illusion was originally scheduled for release on June 6th, 2006, but according to Slayer guitarist Kerry King , other bands had the idea, so it was boring. However, there were media reports that the band could not keep the date due to insufficient studio time. Instead, Eternal Pyre was released as a preview of the upcoming album. In addition to the new title Cult , a live performance by War Ensemble (from Seasons in the Abyss ) and a studio report were included. It was originally assumed that the EP would contain a version of Dead Skin Mask from the same album. The media had received the information that it was about scenes from the live intrusion video, which also dealt with the fact that a Slayer fan had scratched the lettering on his forearm. In addition to regular releases in the USA, Germany, Finland and Sweden, Nuclear Blast Records released a 7 "vinyl picture disc limited to 1000 copies on June 30, 2006.

reception

The reviews of the EP were rather negative. Cult has been described as "the devastating rejection of religion as the cause of the world's conflicts". It would also be about a comment on the USA, which would be portrayed as "the greatest cult in the world". Pitch.com judged: "King and Jeff Hanneman riff like they're summoning a storm of thunder, lightning and human blood": "It's slow, meaty, unrelenting in its tautness. When Araya's voice comes in, the whole track is off the rails and stays there. ”However, the comparatively high price in relation to the content was criticized. Stormbringer.at spoke of an "appetizer" that was "lovelessly put together", but together with the other two previously released tracks Jihad and Eyes of the Insane for the upcoming album Christ Illusion , it would be a "cracker". The EP made it to number 48 in Sweden, number two in Finland, number three in Denmark and number 88 in Switzerland .
