Divine Intervention is the sixth studio album by the thrash metal band Slayer . It was released on October 8, 1994 and was the first album with Paul Bostaph on drums .

Emergence

After the live album Decade of Aggression , Slayer was quiet for a while. Only one contribution on the soundtrack of the film Judgment Night - Sentenced to Kill together with Ice-T was published in 1993 as a sign of life. This release was also the first recording with Paul Bostaph, who replaced Dave Lombardo . Lombardo left in 1992 after various conflicts with the other band members.

Most of the songs on the album were written by Kerry King . Rick Rubin took over the production of the album as always since the Reign in Blood album. The recording sessions turned out to be chaotic as the studios were changed more often. The first sound engineer, who normally works for artists like Tom Petty , had little use for metal music and was replaced by Toby Wright after several sessions.

In the inlay of the CD, there is an incised Slayer logo on the forearm of a fan named Mike Meyers. This fan can be seen again in the live intrusion video.

The following tour was completed with the support bands Biohazard and Machine Head .

Controversy and reception

Divine Intervention has been indicated in Germany since December 16, 1998 by decision of the BPjS due to the content of the songs SS-3 , Circle of Beliefs , Serenity in Murder , 213 and Mind Control .

The album was a huge hit for Slayer. In the reviews, a comparison with Slayer's masterpiece Reign in Blood was drawn , not least because of the short playing time . After the melodic excursions of Seasons in the Abyss, the album has often been referred to as a comeback album, as the music became significantly faster and more aggressive again.

Paul Bostaph, the newcomer, was later extremely critical of the album, calling it his worst work with Slayer.

The album reached # 8 on the Billboard charts in the US , # 15 in Great Britain and # 18 in Germany, Slayer's highest chart position to date.

Song info

SS-3 was the registration number of the vehicle in which Reinhard Heydrich sat, on which an attack was carried out and as a result Heydrich later died of his injuries.

213 deals with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer . The title is a reference to the killer's house number. The text is written from the first person perspective and describes the killer's feelings when killing.
