Christ Illusion is the tenth studio album by the thrash metal band Slayer and the first in the original line-up since 1990. It was released on August 4, 2006 on American Recordings and was produced by Josh Abraham.

Emergence

An eleventh song called "Final Six" was also written. However, this did not make it onto the album because the band no longer managed to record the song in full. Therefore it appeared on a later "Enhanced Edition".

Cover

The cover was designed by Larry Carrol, who had also designed those of Reign in Blood , South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss . He also designed a censored version, as the original picture was perceived by some sellers as "too offensive".

Style & content

The texts criticize religious extremism . The song Jihad , which describes the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 from the perspective of the terrorists , can also be understood as a criticism of the reactions of the government at the time.

Musically, Christ Illusion is a return to the style of the earlier albums (especially Reign in Blood , South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss ). Reviewer Chad Bowar emphasizes drumming and says Dave Lombardo gives the song an "adrenaline explosion". The guitar riffs are also "distinctive and harrowing".

reception

The website stylusmagazine.com praises the progress from the stagnation of the previous albums, even if “ progressive is too strong a word, Slayer is at least still developing.” Allmusic also praises the album, saying that it is “frantic heavy metal merged with Hardcore Thrash ”and“ essential for everyone interested in the genre ”. For the song Eyes Of The Insane , Slayer received the 2007 Grammy Award for best metal performance. The album reached high chart positions in several countries. The German magazine Visions had the album in their list of the 66 + 6 best metal albums of the third millennium in spring 2017.

"Enhanced Version"

On July 27, 2007, a new version of the album was released, which also includes the song Final Six . In addition, a DVD is included, on which both the music video for Eyes of the Insane and excerpts from the Unholy Alliance Tour 2007 can be seen. On the elaborately designed cover of the digipack you can see a wobbly picture that shows a rising hand with a hole in the palm of the hand in front of the Slayer lettering.
