Summer of Sam is a 1999 American film directed by Spike Lee .

Summer of 1977 in New York City . The waitress Dionna and her husband Vinny live in the Bronx . The marriage is unhappy. A friend of Vinny, Richie, who is now part of the newly formed punk movement, meets with Ruby and secretly performs in a gay club.
Murders happen in New York, the perpetrator calls himself Son of Sam . Suspicions arise, former friends suspect Richie because of his change. Vinny argues with the manager of the hair salon where he works. Dionna learns that Vinny was unfaithful to her and leaves him.
The real culprit, David Berkowitz , is caught. At the same time that the television shows pictures of the arrested Berkowitz, the members of a gang of young men decide to lynch Richie, whom they believe to be the Son of Sam. They turn to Vinny, who lures Richie out of his house. The men beat Richie until his mother's friend comes out of his house and yells that the real culprit has been arrested. With the pistol loaded, he forces the youngsters to quit.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film lived mainly from the characters and their development. The character of David Berkowitz only plays a small role. The director Spike Lee does a very good job ("a super job") and reproduces the atmosphere of the time well.

Spike Lee was nominated in 1999 for a prize from the Spanish Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid . He was nominated for the Black Reel Award in 2000 as a director and screenwriter .
John Leguizamo was nominated for the ALMA Award in 2000.
