BlacKkKlansman is a Drama by Spike Lee , which in May 2018 at the International Film Festival of Cannes premiered. The film was released in US cinemas on August 10, 2018 and in German cinemas on August 23, 2018. The film combines elements of the crime film , the crime comedy and the police film . It is based on the experiences of US police officer Ron Stallworth , which he published as a book in 2014 under the title Black Klansman .

In the film, the African-American police officer Ron Stallworth investigates undercover with a white colleague in the local group of the racist secret society Ku Klux Klan (KKK).

At the 2019 Academy Awards , BlacKkKlansman received several nominations, including Best Picture , Spike Lee for Best Director and Adam Driver for Best Supporting Actor . He was awarded for the best adapted screenplay .

action

Young African American Ron Stallworth joined the Colorado Springs Police Department as the first black detective during the civil rights movement in the early 1970s . After a time in the office, he is used as an undercover investigator on his own initiative . At a meeting of the local black student union , he is supposed to find out whether the students allow themselves to be incited by the prominent black power activist Kwame Ture . There he met Patrice Dumas, the chairwoman of the student union, and fell in love with her. She doesn't know that he works for the police and makes an appointment with him. Stallworth can persuade his supervisor to investigate the Ku Klux Klan after calling the KKK local branch and posing as an extremist racist and receiving an offer of membership from the local branch leader Walter Breachway. He now forms a team with his white, Jewish colleague Flip Zimmerman, who goes to face-to-face meetings in the role of Stallworth as a white man, while Stallworth stays in the background and maintains contact with the Klan by phone. Zimmerman always wears a bug at meetings , so he stays in touch with Stallworth, who parks nearby and overhears.

At first they met with distrust, but Stallworth even won the support of David Duke , the grand master of the KKK . They soon manage to penetrate deeper into the organization. They learn that the local group is planning an attack. Stallworth learns from an FBI officer that two of the Klan people are senior government officials and that C4 explosives have been stolen from a military warehouse. KKK Grand Master Duke comes to Colorado Springs for the official initiation of the undercover agent. Because of death threats against him, Stallworth is turned off as a bodyguard for Duke against the team's concerns. Zimmerman is recognized by a clansman during the event as the policeman who put him in jail years ago. When the clan woman Connie Kendrickson leaves the KKK event in a noticeable hurry, Stallworth follows her. She first drives to a meeting of the black student union to plant a bomb, but in view of the massive police presence, after consulting her husband, she switches to plan B and drives to the apartment of the black power activist Patrice Dumas. It was agreed that she should put the explosive device in Dumas' mailbox. But because it doesn't fit in, she puts it under their car. Meanwhile, the Klansmen are on their way to her. Stallworth overwhelms the assassin, but is prevented from arresting and beaten by advancing white police officers, although he calls out to them that he is undercover. In the meantime, Kendrickson's husband has arrived with two other Klan members and detonates the bomb by remote detonation. The men do not know that the bomb is on the car, and since they are standing next to Dumas' car, they blow themselves up. Zimmerman is now on site, freed his colleague and arrested Connie Kendrickson.

At the police station, Stallworth is celebrated by his colleagues, but to the annoyance of the entire department, all investigations into the Ku Klux Klan are suspended and all records destroyed due to alleged budget cuts. The film ends with original footage of the rallies by right-wing extremist groups in Charlottesville in August 2017. Pictures of counter-demonstrators and footage of a car attack on a counter-demonstration are shown. Lee also added US President Donald Trump's statement on the events, equating both groups and claiming that there are decent people among right-wing protesters. A portrait of Heather Heyer , the woman who was murdered in the car attack, appears.

Age ratings and reviews

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The reason for the release states:

“The film paints a precise picture of racism and discrimination and works with a clear juxtaposition of good and bad, with the special unit being shown as a group of exemplary protagonists who are equally and humorous. Although some documentary recordings of riots and outbreaks of violence as well as the accumulation of racist insults can emotionally overwhelm children under the age of 12, 12-year-olds already have sufficient media experience to place these aspects in context and to distance themselves sufficiently. "

The main role of Ron Stallworth was with John David Washington occupied

In December 2017, BlacKkKlansman was put on Variety's list of the 20 most anticipated films of the 2018 cinema year by film critic Dennis Harvey . The film was rated positively by 96 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.3 out of a possible 10 points (as of June 9, 2020). In addition, the film emerged as the winner of the 20th Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Rated Dramas 2018 .

Patrick Wellinski from Deutschlandfunk Kultur says about BlacKkKlansman and his award in Cannes: “This is a fearless film, it is angry and clever and important for our time. He wants to say that this whole shift to the right in America, but also in the whole world, will not work. This film is a statement and that is how you have to understand this price. ”His colleague Anke Leweke thinks that the price is okay, but the film is sometimes a bit tough, and she would like the film to have some of the groove sometimes, which his actors have: "Of course, there is always something like symbolic politics when it comes to the award of palm trees and of course they wanted to show Donald Trump what is actually going on in his country."

Emily Yoshida describes the film in Vulture as stylish, hilarious and absolutely uncompromising. Spike Lee never loses sight of the connection between the events of 1978 and the present, and although he may have portrayed his story between the extremes of the black power movement and white racists, he sensitively makes use of two main characters who are somewhere are in between. Lee moves in stylistic conversation with the blaxploitation genre and introduces his bold protagonist Ron Stallworth as a self-proclaimed vigilante in the style of John Shaft , Yoshida continues. Ron is a fascinating character whose dexterity when changing codes is part of his identity, which is also the reason why he is extremely qualified for this job. Together with Flip, a cop who keeps his Jewish faith a secret, he moves as a tandem.

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian says BlacKkKlansman sometimes seem after a Bizarrität to aspire to the David O. Russell's American Hustle is similar, but also for a kind of Brechtian alienation . The film is an entertaining spectacle, even if it is not quite as balanced as Jordan Peeles satire Get Out .

Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph says the film is more than a comeback and an attack on the specter of white supremacy in the US.

Frank Schnelle from epd Film thinks that the story of Ron Stallworth is the ideal material for Lee to combine the political seriousness of classics like Malcolm X with the stylistic excess of more recent works like Chi-Raq , and that he swirls the forms from start to finish and pitches just so mixed up, with the elements joining together to a largely coherent unit: “Comedy and seriousness, satire and homage, sobriety and grotesque are all part of a narrative position that, despite all despair, has not forgotten how to laugh The tabloid escalation never loses sight of the serious background. ” In a full-page review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Verena Lueken praises the film as a“ masterpiece of parallel montage ”.

Gross profit

Production costs of around $ 15 million are offset by worldwide revenue from cinema screenings of $ 93.4 million. The film recorded 338,414 visitors in Germany.

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film for the subjects English, German , history, social studies , politics and art and links material to the film for the classroom. The article on the film says: “As a film about right-wing extremism , institutional racism, civil rights activists and African American culture, BlacKkKlansman offers a number of other points of contact. With its form-conscious style, however, the film always points out that it is not a closed past. The look at history is motivated by the pressing questions of today. "

Christian Horn from Vision Kino sees a possible use of the film in the subjects of English, history, politics, social studies , ethics and interdisciplinary in democracy education . He sees one of the starting points for the educational work in the “ White Supremacy ” spot shown. First and foremost, the historical lesson provides a basis for a conversation about racism and anti-Semitism as well as for a discussion on the current political shift to the right. Spike Lee draws a connecting line from the Civil War to the lynchings of African Americans, which up until around 1950, mainly in the southern US states, to the right-wing terror in Charlottesville in August 2017. Parallels and differences between then and now can be discussed.

Film analysis

Movie title and genre

In the film title BlacKkKlansman , the three consecutive Ks are an abbreviation for the Ku Klux Klan . The inclusion of this K-triplet between the words "black man" perfectly describes the plot, which is inspired by Ron Stallworth's life, according to Jérémie Couston. The members of various Ku Klux Klan organizations call themselves Klansman . The film The Birth of a Nation , to which there are several allusions and served as a negative template for the film, was originally entitled The Clansman .

In a dpa film review , the Stuttgarter Zeitung states that Spike Lee , who has repeatedly denounced racism against Afro-Americans in his works like Malcolm X , skillfully stages BlacKkKlansman as an exaggerated, grotesque satire , with parallels to today's US politics and on social grievances are shockingly clear. Barbara Schweizerhof says in the Sächsische Zeitung that Lee, who is now one of the old masters of " Black Cinema ", retells the almost unlikely story of the undercover action in the film with the lusty, clown-like energy of a comedy sketch.

Structure and visual style

The film opens with one of the most famous scenes from Gone With the Wind , in which Scarlett O'Hara stumbles across a plaza full of wounded Confederate soldiers, followed by an appearance by Alec Baldwin , who plays a white power extremist. The final sequence shows original footage from the events in Charlottesville . Barbara Schweizerhof from the Sächsische Zeitung says that with the pictures of the neo-Nazi marches there in August 2017 and Trump's comments on them, Lee turns with a “don't think it's that easy” against the “feelgood” of his own film. BlacKkKlansman may not be a perfect film, with his agitprop style he is at odds with the usual Cannes auteur cinema taste. Frédéric Jaeger from Critic.de explains, "precisely because the film constantly sabotages itself, incites propaganda and undermines it, quotes the present and sometimes neglects the development of plot and characters", Spike Lee's award in Cannes is very sympathetic.
