Barry Alexander Brown

Barry Alexander Brown (born November 28, 1960 in Warrington , Cheshire ) is a British- born American film director and film editor .

life and work

Brown's first directorial work was to co-direct the documentary The War at Home (1979) with Glenn Silber . Both directors were nominated for an Oscar in the category of best documentary ; this made Brown, at the age of 19, one of the youngest nominees for this category. He also led directing in The Who's Tommy, the Amazing Journey (1993), a documentary about the album Tommy by The Who , and the movie Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control (2002), in which Bronson Pinchot played the leading role.

Brown gained fame through his longstanding collaboration with director Spike Lee . He edited some of Lee's best-known films, including Do the Right Thing (1989), Malcolm X (1992), Spike Lee's Game of Life (1998), 25 Hours (2002) and Inside Man (2006). He was nominated for an Oscar for editing Lee's film BlacKkKlansman (2018).

In addition to his work in documentary, television and feature film productions, Brown also edited music videos, e.g. B. for Michael Jackson , Prince , Stevie Wonder , Public Enemy and Arrested Development as well as trailers and commercials .

Brown was a private lecturer in film studies at Columbia University .
