25 hours (Original title: 25th Hour ) is an American film by Spike Lee from 2002, which is based on the book of the same name by David Benioff . The film was treated with an estimated budget of five million dollars rotated.

action

Monty Brogan has been sentenced to seven years in prison as a drug trafficker. At the beginning of the film he is in the situation of having to serve his prison sentence in 25 hours. During the day he says goodbye to his father, his girlfriend Naturelle, his friends and his client. The film works through the various stories in episodes and sometimes uses flashbacks.

They all have their own problems with themselves and the situation. His father appeals to his son to evade the prison sentence, his girlfriend may have betrayed him to the police, his client, whom Monty did not betray, offers him to support the father, but Monty wants to evade the scene. It also turns out that it was not his girlfriend but his friend and partner who betrayed him in the drug deals. He does not kill this, as his client demands of him, but leaves it to him.

His two oldest friends, the teacher Jacob, who is in love with his student Mary, and the cynical broker Frank, have problems of their own in their lives. Only their friendship gives them stability. Monty asks both of them one last favor. Jacob is supposed to record Monty's dog, whom he saves in the first scene of the film, for the time that Monty is in custody. On the other hand, on the morning of his arrival in prison, he asks Frank to beat him up, so that his face is disfigured and he becomes less attractive for attacks by other inmates.

Monty, whose face is now badly injured, goes back home to his girlfriend, where he is picked up by his father shortly afterwards to drive to the prison. He is considering the possibility of fleeing to the west. In a kind of vision, it is shown how Monty's life could develop after his escape: He breaks off all contact with home, builds a new life in a small town in the desert, and a few years later his girlfriend Naturelle visits him, and In Monty's new life, the two start a family with children, to whom he tells his life story in the penultimate scene.

The last scene shows how Monty and his father drive past the exit to the west and are on their way to the prison.

New York's role shortly after September 11th

The city of New York plays another leading role in the character study immediately after the attacks on the towers of the World Trade Center . The film begins with a view of the light monument Tribute in Light at Ground Zero of the World Trade Center . Frank's room points straight to the gash. The highlight of the film is a scene with Monty ( Edward Norton ), who stands in front of a mirror and makes a hate speech against the city and its inhabitants, which can just as easily be understood as a declaration of love.

reception

“An intense drama carried out by excellent actors, which projects its subjective perspectives outwards through the constant gaze on New York after September 11, 2001. The film maintains hope without peddling an overly simple message. "

“With great cast, a fine script and terrific music, Black Cinema eccentric Spike Lee creates a moving picture of a broken existence that is hopeful for the future. He also connects the fate of his three main characters with that of a city in a partly subtle, partly too striking way. Thanks to Benioff's fine presentation, a remarkable drama, not least about friendship and morals. "

- Must-have films

In 2016, 25 hours landed 26th of the 100 most important films of the 21st century in a survey by the BBC . The year before, Lee's directorial work was 94th in the BBC's choice of 100 most important American films.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.

Remarks

  • The yellow muscle car at the beginning of the film is a 1970 Dodge Super Bee .
  • At the end of his hate speech, main actor Monty tries to wipe the words "Fuck You" off the mirror. This is a reference to the novel The Catcher in the Rye .
  • Both the Dutch Porngrind band Cliteater used the monologue by Monty Brogan ( Misanthropigs on the album Eat Clit or Die ), as well as the German hardcore band Driving the Salt on their song Death of a Generation from the album The Ghosts Stopped Watching .
  • The German title of the film 25 hours misses the decisive point of the original title 25th Hour , because the whole film narrative works towards this one hour in which Monty is to be imprisoned.
  • The film grossed around $ 24 million in cinemas around the world, including $ 13 million in the United States.
