David Benioff (* 25. September 1970 in New York City than David Friedman ) is an American writer , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

David Benioff is the youngest of three children of Barbara Benioff and Stephen Friedman, a former board member of Goldman Sachs . While still young, he took his mother's family name. He attended the Collegiate School and studied at Dartmouth College . He then worked briefly as a bouncer at the age of 22 before becoming an English teacher at Brooklyn's Poly Prep Country Day School . He then studied creative writing at the University of California, Irvine and Trinity College , Dublinwhere he received his Master of Fine Arts with a thesis on Samuel Beckett .

Benioff has been writing since his studies. He wrote three novels within eight years. He never sent the first to publishers and received 34 rejections for the second. He also received 13 rejections for his third novel, Fireman Down , before making his debut as a writer under the title The 25th Hour in 2000. At the same time he got a literary agent who advertised his novel, which in turn attracted the attention of actor Tobey Maguire . Maguire wanted to film the story and hired Spike Lee to direct and Benioff to write the screen. The feature film of the same name was released just two years later . Since then, Benioff has been able to establish himself as a screenwriter with scripts for Troy , Kite Runner and X-Men Origins: Wolverine .

After the short story collection Alles auf Anfang in 2004 , his second novel was published almost five years later in 2008, City of Thieves , which was published in German as the City of Thieves . He had the idea for the story back in 2000, although he didn't know how it was going to end. Only after reading several books and in particular by Harrison Salisbury's 900 days. The siege of Leningrad and Curzio Malapartes Kaputt was inspired, the intensive writing phase began in September 2006. Contrary to the first chapter, which sold the story as a fictionalized truth of his grandparents, these were again born Americans.

However, Benioff only got greater international attention with the fantasy television series Game of Thrones produced for HBO . Together with DB Weiss , he adapted the saga The Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin . Due to the success of the series, Weiss and Benioff were commissioned by Disney to work on the scripts of several films in the Star Wars universe after the end of Game of Thrones and also to produce them. An exact release date was not initially announced. At the end of October 2019, the withdrawal of the two from the project of a new Star Wars trilogy was announced, which was scheduled to begin in 2022. The reason given was the lack of time given further projects.

After dating actress Amanda Peet for four years , they both announced their engagement in July 2005. They were married on September 30, 2006 at Peet's Old High School in New York. She was four months pregnant. After they had a daughter in 2007, the second daughter was born in 2010. A son was born in 2014 as the third child.
