action

Two boyfriends, Amir and Hassan, from different ethnic groups, grow up in Kabul in the 1970s. Amir, the son of an upper-class Pashtun , makes serious allegations for the death of his mother, who died in his birth. Hassan, the house servant's son and member of the Hazara , an ethnic group discriminated against in Afghanistan, likes to have Amir read stories to him. Hassan can neither read nor write, but his character is a thoroughly sincere person and Amir, whom he admires very much, devoted to unshakable friendship. The two boys enjoy life in middle-class Kabul and together win a competition with paper kites .

One day the elder Assef tries to beat up the two friends. He insults them as homosexuals and Hassan as non-Pashtuns. Hassan drives out Assef and his friends with his twin . A little later, however, Hassan is beaten up and raped by Assef. Amir, who is secretly observing this but is too cowardly to help Hassan, makes serious accusations after this incident. Out of shame about his failure, he cannot handle the fact that Hassan is still around and blames Hassan for a fictitious theft so that he can be chased out of the house. Hassan admits the deed, although he did not commit it, out of loyalty to his friend. Amir's father forgives the alleged act, but Hassan's father Ali leaves the house with his son to avoid the shame.

After the Soviet invasion , Amir and his father flee to Pakistan. They later move to California, where Amir graduates from college. Amir meets Soraya, daughter of a respected Afghan general, who has also fled Afghanistan, and marries her. Shortly after the wedding, Amir's father dies. Amir's first book appears.

In 2000, Amir was asked to come to Pakistan by his father's old friend, Rahim Khan, who had encouraged him to write at the time. When he arrived there, he learned from him that Hassan was the son of his father and the servant Sanaubar. Hassan and his wife Farzana were killed by the Taliban , leaving behind a son, Sohrab. Rahim Khan asks Amir to return to Kabul to get Sohrab out of the orphanage.

In Kabul, which was marked by the atrocities of Taliban rule , Amir learns that Sohrab is no longer in the orphanage, but was abducted by an influential Taliban. Amir encounters Assef again, who has now become a Taliban functionary and abuses Sohrab as Baccha Baazi . Amir demands that Sohrab be surrendered, but is brutally beaten by Assef. Sohrab saves him with a shot of his twins, whereupon the two of them can flee back to Pakistan with the help of their driver, a confidante of Rahim Khan. Amir takes the boy to the United States. Sohrab is withdrawn and it is only while flying a kite on the California coast that the ice melts between him and Amir.

Reviews

Frank Scheck wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on October 8, 2007 that the film was a very effective and sincere adaptation of the novel. The participation of the young actors in the rape scene has caused controversy. The technical side is absolutely convincing - which includes filming the parts of the action in China that are set in Afghanistan .

Alissa Simon wrote in Variety magazine on October 5, 2007 that the detailed film adaptation of the novel should win just as many fans as it did. The unknown performers would give a sense of authenticity.

Alberto Iglesias won the Satellite Award for Best Score in 2007 and was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 2008.

The film was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes .
