action
London in 1903 : The playwright James Matthew Barrie , despite his fantastic ideas, has only moderate success with his plays and his life is also rather unspectacular. He distances himself more and more from his wife, whom he cannot take into his fantasy worlds. One day he meets the young widow Sylvia Davies and her four sons. Barrie's environment, especially his wife, and also Sylvia's mother disapprove of his interest in the young mother, but he befriends her and her children. His wife separates from him, the separation is not difficult for Barrie.
He spends a lot of time with the Davies children. He dresses up, teaches them tricks and enjoys new stories with them by creating fantasy worlds with cowboys and Indians or pirates. He has taken the young, withdrawn Peter into his heart in particular and uses his name for the title character of his new play, in which he processes the adventures with the children. At the beginning of rehearsals, Barrie confronts the actors with unusual ideas. For example, they should fly across the stage, talk to fairies or wear animal costumes - and after the initial skepticism, Peter Pan becomes a complete success.
Peter's mother Sylvia falls seriously ill, which puts his faith and imagination to the test; but thanks to Barrie and his work Peter Pan , he retains a portion of the imagination. Before Sylvia dies, she appoints her mother and Barrie as the guardians.
background
The Miramax company invested 25 million dollars in film production . The worldwide revenue was about 115 million dollars. The premiere of the film, which was actually planned for 2003, had to be postponed for a year because the rights holder Columbia Pictures wanted to publish its own Peter Pan version in the same year .
The interior recordings were made at Pinewood Studios , Shepperton Studios and London's Richmond Theater .
At the beginning of the cowboy scene, a sign saying "Great Ormond Mining Co." is displayed. This is a reference to Great Ormond Street Hospital , a children's hospital to which Barrie bequeathed the copyrights to his play Finding Neverland .
The automobile with which Barrie drives the Davies family to the summer house is an original from the late 19th century and was by no means roadworthy by itself. In order to make the vehicle seem functional, it was allowed to roll down a hill. With the use of a flock of sheep blocking the road, the slow rolling of the car appeared like a braking process, but was due to the lack of a motorized drive.
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
Cameo
The director makes a cameo in the scene where there is a costume briefing with JM Barrie.
Reviews
“After proving himself to be a talented director with Monster's Ball , Marc Forster presents his next Hollywood production: He tells the heartfelt story of the genesis of the classic 'Peter Pan'. Above all, Johnny Depp in the lead role turns this subtly spun fairy tale into a melancholy fable about the joy of childhood. "
“The contemplative and entertaining drama based on a theatrical presentation vaguely adheres to Barrie's biography and is about the power of the imagination, which, even under tight social conditions, repeatedly and effectively crosses the boundaries of the levels of reality. Thanks to the empathetic actors, an equally captivating and amusing pleasure. "
