Winners and nominees of the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Original Score ( Best Original Score - Motion Picture ), which rewards the most outstanding achievements of composers of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1948.

In 31 out of 64 cases, the winner was later awarded an Oscar , most recently in 2020 when the award was presented to Hildur Guðnadóttir ( Joker ) . In 1950, 1952, 1973, 1974, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1991, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2014 and 2019 the excellent film music was not considered for the Oscar.

The rare honor of being nominated for two different film scores in one year was Miklós Rózsa ( El Cid and King of Kings ) in 1962 , Michel Legrand in 1972 ( Le Mans and Summer '42 ), and Paul Williams in 1977 (victory for A Star Is Born and nomination for Bugsy Malone ), 1978 John Williams (victory for Star Wars and nomination for Close Encounters of the Third Kind ), 1980 Carmine Coppola (victory for Apocalypse Now and nomination for The Black Stallion ) and Jerry Goldsmith (nominations for Alien - The Uncanny Beings from an Alien World and Star Trek: The Film ), 1984 Giorgio Moroder (victory for Flashdance and nomination for Scarface ) and 2015 Alexandre Desplat (victory for Grand Budapest Hotel and nomination for The Imitation Game - A Top Secret Life ).

With Max Steiner (1948 for Our Life with Father ), Franz Waxman (1951 for Boulevard der Dämmerung ), Ernest Gold (1960 for The Last Shore ) and Frederick Loewe (1968 for Camelot - At King Arthur's Court and 1975 for The Little Prince ) awards were given to film composers from German-speaking countries who had emigrated to the United States. They were followed by the Germans Hans Zimmer (victories in 1995 and 2001 for The Lion King and Gladiator ) and Burkhard Dallwitz (victory in 1999 for The Truman Show ).

Awarded together with Zimmer in 2001, the Australian Lisa Gerrard and the Icelandic Hildur Guðnadóttir ( awarded for Joker in 2020 ) are the only women so far to have won this category.
