Johnny Mandel (born November 23, 1925 in New York City , New York - † June 29, 2020 in Ojai , California ) was an American composer for jazz and film music as well as trumpeter and trombonist .
Live and act
Johnny Mandel studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School . In 1943 he first played trumpet with Joe Venuti , in 1944 with Billy Rogers and trombone in the orchestras of Boyd Raeburn , Jimmy Dorsey , Buddy Rich , Georgie Auld and Chubby Jackson . As an arranger, he created the bebop sound for Henry Jerome's orchestra . In 1949 he accompanied the singer June Christy in Bob Cooper's orchestra . 1951 to 1953 he played and arranged in the band of Elliot Lawrence , 1953 with Count Basie . He then settled in Los Angeles , where he worked as a bass trumpeter for Zoot Sims and wrote the music for the film I Want to Live in 1958 . He wrote u. a. the jazz compositions Not Really the Blues for Woody Herman 1949, Hershey Bar 1950 and Pot Luck 1953 for Stan Getz , Straight Life 1953 and Low Life 1956 for Count Basie and Tommyhawk 1954 for Chet Baker . He was responsible for the early 1960s, Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band active (Barbara's Theme) .
In the 1960s, Mandel turned more to film and light music. In 1966 he and Paul Francis Webster received the Grammy for "Song of the Year" with the song The Shadow of Your Smile (Love Theme from the Sandpiper) . This song was also awarded an Oscar and later interpreted in many versions, including by Tony Bennett . Johnny Mandel worked with many well-known greats, for example Count Basie, Frank Sinatra ( Ring a Ding Ding 1960) and Shirley Horn .
In 1992 he won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal for his contribution to the album Unforgettable by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole . In 1993 he received the same award for the album Here's to Life by Shirley Horn (1991).
In 2003, Mandel produced and arranged the debut album of the singer Michael Bublé together with David Foster and Humberto Gatica . In 2007 he was hired again by Bublé. Dream , the thirteenth and final track of his number one album Call Me Irresponsible , was orchestrated and co-produced by Mandel.
In 2004 he was instrumental in the success of Tony Bennett, who received a Grammy for the album The Art of Romance , in which Johnny Mandel conducted the orchestra. The two musicians had previously worked together on the Movie Song Album album in 1966 , and Mandel was the musical director of this album.
The best-known compositions also include the title song of the M * A * S * H 4077 series , Suicide Is Painless , as well as the songs Close Enough for Love , Emily and A Time for Love .
Almond died in June 2020 at the age of 94.
