Sherrie Maricle

Sharon L. "Sherrie" Maricle (born September 2, 1963 in Buffalo ) is an American jazz drummer and composer.

Live and act

Maricle, who grew up in Endicott , first learned the clarinet and cello before switching to the snare drum . At the age of eleven she attended a concert by Buddy Rich with his Killer Force Orchestra , which set the course for her future life. She studied at Binghamton University until her bachelor's degree in 1985, before completing her master's degree at New York University in 1986 . In addition, she took lessons from Mel Lewis , Adam Nussbaum and Jeff Hamilton . During her studies she accompanied Slam Stewart as a professional musician from 1984 to 1987 ; since 1986 she has belonged to the Emery Davis Orchestra and in 1987 also to the Bill Lombardo Orchestra. Between 1987 and 1993 she directed the jam sessions at the Village Gate jazz club ; she had a combo with Peter Appleyard . She joined the New York Pops in the early 1990s, performing with Clark Terry and Al Gray . She also became musical director for the dancer Maurice Hines. Since 1993 she has been directing the Diva Jazz Orchestra from drums , from which the Diva Jazz Trio and the Five Play quintet emerged . She also played in The Velvet Glove , Unpredictable Nature , the Oliver Jones Trio and the New Jersey Symphony . Maricle completed his doctorate in 2000 on the Concerto pour batterie et petit orchester by Darius Milhaud and a comparable work of his own. She also composes (including symphonic works for the New York Pops ) and works as a conductor and teacher at the New York Summer Music Festival .

Prizes and awards

Maricle was featured on the Down Beat Polls as a talent that deserves further attention. In 1997 and 2000 she was named "Teacher of the Year" by New York University . Nat Hentoff nominated the album On the Brink of her band Five Play in JazzTimes for CD of the year 1999. In 2009 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.
