history

Stanley Kay, the former manager of Buddy Rich , conducted a band in 1990 with drummer Sherrie Maricle. He was so taken with her game that he decided to build an all-female formation around her. On March 30, 1993, this band gave their debut concert in New York. The performance was so successful that the orchestra was even invited to Carnegie Hall the following year . The formation also included advanced soloists such as Anat Cohen , Anke Helfrich , Christine and Ingrid Jensen , Virginia Mayhew , Carol Sudhalter , Sue Terry , Karolina Strassmayer and Liesl Whitaker .

The band, which is known for classic big band sounds "with a lot of vigor" ( Reclam's Jazzlexikon ), has been shown on television several times and has performed at international jazz festivals in North America and Europe. She also has the stage with Nancy Wilson , Joe Williams , Diane Schuur , Carmen Bradford , Marlena Shaw , Dee Daniels, Dee Dee Bridgewater , Rosemary Clooney , Cleo Laine , Nnenna Freelon , Clark Terry , Billy Taylor , Terry Gibbs , John Pizzarelli , Randy Brecker and Dave Brubeck shared.
