Terry Gibbs (* Julius Gubenko on 13. October 1924 in Brooklyn ) is an American jazz - vibraphone .

Gibbs won an amateur competition as a xylophone player at the age of twelve. After his military service in World War II, he performed with Tommy Dorsey from 1946 to 1948 , accompanied Chubby Jackson on a Scandinavian tour and then worked with Buddy Rich , Woody Herman's band (1948/1949) and with Benny Goodman (1950 to 1952).

In 1957 he went to Los Angeles , where he worked as a studio musician and led various bands, the most famous of which was the Terry Gibbs Dream Band . In the 1960s he was the musical director of the Steve Allen Show . In the 1980s and 1990s he mainly worked with the quintet of Buddy DeFranco . In addition, musicians such as Terry Pollard , Pete Jolly , Alice McLeod and John Campbell were among his partners.

His son is the drummer Gerry Gibbs .
