Sal Nistico
Salvatore "Sal" Nistico (born April 12, 1940 in Syracuse (New York) as Salvatore Nistico ; † March 3, 1991 in Bern ) was a modern jazz saxophonist .
Nistico started on the alto saxophone , switched to tenor in 1956 , but also played the baritone saxophone for some time . First he played rhythm & blues , in 1959 he was a member of the Jazz Brothers of Gap and Chuck Mangione . He was then a member of Woody Hermans Herd from 1962 to 1965 , which received new attention thanks to his impulsive solos. In 1965 he became a member of Count Basie's band , but returned several times (1968–1970, 1971, 1981–1982) to Herman to play with his hearth , as heard on the album Woody's Winners with solos in "Northwest Passage" and "Woody's Whistle". He also worked with Chet Baker , Don Ellis , Stan Tracey, and Buddy Rich . He then taught at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern and played in Central Europe with Jimmy Woode , Benny Bailey and with the quartet of Joe Haider . Shortly after returning to the United States, he had drug problems again, which contributed to his death.
