Chuck Mangione
Charles Frank "Chuck" Mangione (* 29. November 1940 in Rochester , New York ) is an American jazz - flugelhorn player and composer . He achieved international success in 1978 with his jazz pop single Feels So Good , in which jazz guitarist Grant Geissman also participated.
Life
Mangione gained musical attention with the band The Jazz Brothers , which he led with his brother Gap , and recorded the three albums. From 1958 to 1963 he attended the Eastman School of Music and then joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers , where he joined the ranks of jazz trumpeters Clifford Brown , Kenny Dorham , Bill Hardman , Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard , who came before him had occupied.
Another big step in Mangione's career was his return to the Eastman School of Music, where he took over the direction of the jazz orchestra there between 1968 and 1972. In 1970 he recorded the live album Friends and Love with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra , which included the title Hill Where the Lord Hides , and which helped him to a record deal with Mercury Records and a Grammy nomination. He received another Grammy nomination under Mercury Records for the title track from the album Land Of Make Believe .
Under A&M Records , his recording Chase The Clouds Away became the theme song for the television broadcast of the 1976 Summer Olympics , and Mangione won his first Grammy with Bellavia in 1977. In the late 1970s, he received other awards, including his hit Feels So Good , whose tune was described in a 1980 entry in Current Biography as the catchiest tune by the Beatles since the song Michelle .
Mangione's soundtrack of the same name for the film Children of Sanchez was awarded a Grammy in 1978 in the category “ Best Instrumental Performance - Pop ” and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1979 , but could not prevail against Midnight Express by Giorgio Moroder .
In 1980, Give It All You Got became the theme of the Winter Olympics . Columbia Records signed him in the 1980s , and numerous albums and successful concerts followed.
In 1989, after 25 years as a musician, he stopped presenting himself in public and did not record any further albums. It only started again in 1994, with many suspecting the death of Dizzy Gillespies as the trigger, as Mangione adored him.
