Agustín Moreto (born April 9, 1618 in Madrid , † October 28, 1669 in Toledo ) was a Spanish dramatic poet .

Career

Don Agustín Moreto y Cabaña (spr. -Wánja) came from a family from Valencia, studied in Alcalá and died on October 28, 1668 as rector of the Hospital del Refugio in Toledo. Nothing further is known about his living conditions.

His numerous comedies, some of which he wrote alone and some together with other authors, are distinguished by their sensible composition, skilful execution and excellent characteristics. His comedies, in particular, are among the best in Spanish theater when it comes to comic effects.

His masterpiece: El desdén, con el desdén , one of the four classic pieces of the older Spanish stage, was arranged by Joseph Schreyvogel as Donna Diana for the German stage and also by Carl August Dohrn ( Spanish Dramas , Vol. 3, Berlin 1843) German broadcast. Donna Diana is also the title of the comic opera in three acts by Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek , to which the composer adapted the libretto after Schreyvogel (alias Carl August West).

In addition, the character play El lindo Don Diego and Trampa adelante are particularly successful.

Among his more serious dramas, El Valiente justiciero (German by Moriz Rapp in Spanisches Theater , vol. 5, Hildburghausen 1870) and La fuerza de la sangre ( edited in German by Aloys Isidor Jeitteles ) are considered to be the most excellent.

Some of his pieces were printed in three volumes (Madrid 1654 to 1681); others are in different collections. A selection of the best appeared in the Biblioteca de autores españoles , vol. 39 (Madrid 1856).
