Giorgio Moroder
Giovanni Giorgio Moroder (born April 26, 1940 in Ortisei in Val Gardena , South Tyrol ) is an Italian music producer and composer .
Moroder is known as the “ dance music godfather” with his music composed mainly on the synthesizer . Together with Donna Summer and Pete Bellotte , he developed modern dance music into a new idea of international pop .
With songs like Love to Love You Baby (Donna Summer), I Feel Love (Donna Summer), On the Radio (Donna Summer), Call Me ( Blondie ) or Cat People (Putting Out Fire) ( David Bowie ), for which he wrote and produced the music, he became a star producer in the 1970s and 1980s with hits worldwide and over 100 gold and platinum records. With him as producer of the album Bad Girls and the singles Hot Stuff and Bad Girls , Donna Summer became the most successful woman in the hit parades in 1979 in Germany and 1979 and 1980 in the USA, and Blondie's Call Me became the most successful song of 1980 in the USA UNITED STATES. It won four Grammys from 1983 to 2013 and three Oscars from 1978 to 1986 , for the soundtrack at 12 o'clock at night - Midnight Express , the first electronic soundtrack to win an Oscar for the movie song Flashdance… What a Feeling ( Irene Cara ) from the film Flashdance and for the film song Take My Breath Away ( Berlin ) from the film Top Gun - You fear neither death nor the devil . He also composed the official Olympic song Reach Out (Paul Engemann) for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the official Olympic song Hand in Hand ( Koreana ) for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and for the 1990 World Cup in Italy the official song Un'estate italiana ( Gianna Nannini and Edoardo Bennato ).
biography

Coming from a Ladin family, Moroder , called "Hansjörg" by his mother, grew up in Val Gardena in three languages ( Ladin , German and Italian ). He also speaks English as a foreign language. He started playing guitar as a teenager and toured Europe with bands from the age of 19. He started his career in the Aachen Scotch Club . From 1967 onwards he concentrated on songwriting and composing. Among other things, he wrote a hit for Ricky Shayne with Michael Holm . In 1969 he was quite successful as "Giorgio" with the bubblegum number Looky, Looky in the French, Italian and Spanish charts. Even then, Moroder was interested in music production, especially in the new electronic innovations of those years. In 1970 he produced the first German-language hit in which a synthesizer was used: Arizona Man in the version by Mary Roos climbed to number nine in the charts. In early 1971 he bought a Moog synthesizer . His next and first bigger own hit Son of My Father from 1972, already produced together with long-term work partner Pete Bellotte , was also created using the synthesizer, even if the electronics were not yet in the foreground.
Moroder had meanwhile set up his own studio in Munich , Musicland . From 1973 Giorgio Moroder worked with the ex- Boston artist and former musical singer Donna Summer . After a European tour of the hippie musical Hair, Summer, born in LaDonna Adrian Gaines, ended up in Munich, where she was living as a single mother at the time. In a team with arranger Harold Faltermeyer , drummer and co-author Keith Forsey and sound engineer Jürgen Koppers , Moroder created an energetic disco sound for them. The song The Hostage, which was released from her first solo album Lady of the Night from 1974, was quite successful in Holland and France. The breakthrough for Summer and Moroder came in 1976 with the erotic song Love to Love You, Baby, which was boycotted by the BBC .
In early 1976, Moroder and Bellotte also released the instrumental single Take Five / Enterprise under the band project name MLS (Musicland Set) , which had just as little commercial success as loner, the solo album Moroders sung in German, which he had released a year earlier and later withdrew from the market by trying to buy up all the remaining copies. In February 1976 Love to Love You, Baby reached number 2 on the US charts (Billboard Hot 100), and the disco genre was born. Moroder: “I think we invented the bass drum and bass sound, which became part of modern disco music.” The producer admits that he drew from numerous sources. B. from Philadelphia or Philly Soul , from Motown style, but also from contemporary electronic bands in Germany, such as Popol Vuh or Tangerine Dream . The title was released without the bassist Dave King being named as a co-composer. This led King to a lawsuit against Giorgio Moroder, but King lost after a few years. He had stated that the bass line figure on the single was his invention, not the Moroders, and that it was only as a formative element that helped the music track to global success.
The electronic influences were even more evident in 1977 on the Moroder-produced Donna Summer hit I Feel Love . The song climbed to the top of the British charts in July of that year. With his repetitive synthesizer loops he still influenced numerous producers of electronic dance music in the 1990s . I Feel Love led to another legal battle, this time on the part of Eberhard Schoeners , who claimed that Moroder had copied the synthesizer sequence from him; this time too, Moroder won. In 1978 Moroder moved to the USA and composed the soundtrack for the Hollywood film Midnight Express , his first attempt in this field was immediately rewarded with an Oscar . In total, he then composed and produced over a dozen film scores, including for well-known works such as Top Gun , Scarface , Katzenmenschen , Flashdance and American Gigolo . For the soundtrack to The Neverending Story, he wrote and produced the song The NeverEnding Story , which was released in 1984 and became a worldwide hit. He also contributed the official song for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Reach Out , as well as for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul ( Hand in Hand ) and for the 1990 World Cup ( Un'estate italiana ). In 1992 he composed for the cartoon series As the Animals Left the Forest, the closing music with the title Never Give Up . He also wrote the song Forever Friends for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing .

During his career, Giorgio Moroder has worked with numerous greats in the music business, for example with the Sparks , Elton John , the Three Degrees , David Bowie , Philip Oakey , Freddie Mercury , Blondie , Barbra Streisand , Pat Benatar , Roger Daltrey , Chaka Khan and Cher . He remixed a. a. Music from Eurythmics and Heaven 17 . He was awarded three Oscars, three Grammys and four Golden Globes . His music productions always gave rise to speculation about the supposedly soulless "music machine" as the basis of his music. “I'm a producer, not a politician,” Moroder said soberly, “so I make music and not stories.” In addition to the music business, Giorgio Moroder has also been devoting himself to computer-generated video and photo art for several years, and he was also involved in a super sports car project ( Cizeta Moroder ).
Moroder's musical contribution to the controversial 1984 revision of the silent film classic Metropolis alienated some, but the lasting influence of his work on newer musical genres such as techno , house or EDM is recognized. In 1987 he produced the duo by Falco and Brigitte Nielsen Body Next to Body . A fairly well-known title came in 2000: a Trance - remix by Jam & Spoon his 1970s-title The Chase .
Giorgio Moroder now lives in Los Angeles ( Beverly Hills ) with his Mexican wife Francisca Gutierrez and their son, who was born in 1989 . In Val Gardena he still owns a home, where he spends his holidays.

Moroder was one of the star guests on the Daft Punk album Random Access Memories , which was released on May 17, 2013 by Columbia Records : In a recording booth, Daft Punk Moroder had Moroder talk about his life. The booth was equipped with different microphone models, each typical of its time - from the 1960s to the present day - whereby Daft Punk's intention was to use the microphone from the time Moroder was talking about. Parts of the recorded monologue were used for the song Giorgio by Moroder . Apart from this vocal recording, Moroder did not take part in the album.
In the summer of 2014 Moroder released two new works, his official remix of Coldplays Midnight and a new single ( Giorgio's Theme ).
In 2015 Moroder released a new album, Déjà Vu , on which Kylie Minogue , Britney Spears , Sia , Charli XCX , Mikky Ekko , Foxes and Matthew Koma can be heard. The first single with Kylie Minogue, Right Here, Right Now, was released on January 20, 2015.
Trivia

- Moroder was temporarily involved in the project of the Cizeta V16T super sports car and still owns the prototype today, which was still called "Cizeta-Moroder".
- In the PSP - & - PS2 game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories Giorgio Moroder's music is played on the radio station "Flashback FM", including The Chase (from 12 noon - Midnight Express ).
- His Our Father , composed in 1975, has been included in the praise of God in various Catholic dioceses . In the Austrian dioceses it bears the number 779, in the diocese of Regensburg the number 739.
