Scotch Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scotch Club in Aachen was a restaurant and dance hall that was expanded in 1959 into a “Jockey Dance Bar”, probably the first discotheque in Germany with music played from records and announced by a disc jockey (DJ).

history

Although the world's first nightclubs had already appeared in occupied Paris during World War II, it was mostly common at that time to have live music played by smaller bands. The owner Franzkarl Schwendinger let his guests play well-known songs from the radio on records. The first evening, October 19, 1959, was initially unsuccessful, as this form was not well received by the guests. They were used to listening to live music in bars and found this form to be “dead music”. During the course of the evening, Klaus Quirini , who was supposed to report on the opening as a volunteer for the Neue Rhein Zeitung / Aachener Zeitung, took on the role of disc jockey because he also disliked the previous format. In the style of the then well-known radio DJs such as Chris Howland from the NWDR , he said the first A ship will arrive from Lale Andersen with the words: “Ladies and gentlemen, we roll up our trousers and let water in the hall Ship will come with Lale Andersen ”. His moderation and interactive games with the audience were well received. It was exactly the kind of interaction that the owner Franzkarl Schwendinger had in mind, so that from then on Quirini played as DJ Heinrich (self-announcement: Heinrich the penultimate ) in the Scotch Club. This made the Scotch Club the first discotheque in Germany according to today's understanding - without live music - and Klaus Quirini the first DJ, although the Scotch Club kept the description Tanzbar for some time before it was called a discotheque .

Later, the later television presenter Max Schautzer also put on the program for a while . Udo Jürgens , Peter Maffay , The Rattles and Giorgio Moroder, among others, began their careers in the Aachen Scotch Club.

The club was also known for its strict dress code. Today he denied entry to well-known personalities such as Frank Elstner or Udo Lindenberg due to the lack of a tie.

The Scotch Club was open under changing owners until 1992, before the house at Aachener Dahmengraben 16 was sold and its use as a discotheque was prohibited under a new owner. After a renovation, nothing reminds of the Scotch Club today.
