As a child he learned to play the violin . He switched from secondary school to the Ruperti grammar school in Mühldorf am Inn .

With vacation work on the construction site, he earned money for his first guitar. In 1964 Maffay joined the newly formed band The Beat Boys as a guitarist , later renamed The Dukes . The band played songs by Bob Dylan , The Pretty Things , Small Faces , Herman's Hermits , Cream , The Lovin 'Spoonful , The Kinks and Donovan in the “Weißer Hirsch” pub in Waldkraiburg, where they also had their first practice room . You performed in the region around Mühldorf and were a local celebrity within a radius of 50 kilometers.

After high school in 1968 after two non-promotion had to leave Maffay began an apprenticeship as process engraver in Munich, where he met his former classmate Margaret Kraus , daughter of Alfred Kraus . Career

Peter Maffay in Leipzig (2012)

In 1969 Michael Kunze became aware of Maffay when he was looking for up-and-coming artists for self-written songs. On January 15, 1970, Du, produced by Kunze, was released as the first single by Maffay, who was still underage. On March 21, 1970 Maffay had his first television appearance in the ZDF hit parade . The hit parade made Maffay known in Germany, and Du became the biggest German-language hit of 1970. At the same time, the song was also placed in the charts of the Netherlands (gold), Norway, Austria, Belgium (gold) and Switzerland. Over a million singles have been sold. The success of Du was unattainable with the follow-up singles, with his manager Michael Conradt in 1973 the style also changed, which was first shown on our street on Saturday evening . During the remainder of the 1970s, Maffay became a big name in the music business with conventional country and rock and roll numbers and ballads . He went on excursions into country rock together with the German singer-songwriter Johnny Tame as Tame & Maffay .

In the late 1970s and early 1980s Maffay made a stylistic change from country singer to " German rocker ". With the 1.6 million times sold album Steppenwolf, a sales record at the time, Maffay made it to the top of the album charts in 1979. His second number one hit was So bist du on the album . The following album Revanche in 1980 was even more successful, with the karat song You must go over seven bridges , composition: Ed Swillms / text: Helmut Richter . To date, over 2.1 million records have been sold.

Maffay experienced a low point in his career in 1982, when he appeared in several German cities in the opening act for the Rolling Stones , but was hardly accepted by the concert goers. Maffay was announced at the start of the tour in Hanover by Peter Wolf , the singer of the J. Geils Band , with the question of whether one liked "Schlager". During his subsequent performance, Maffay was pelted with tomatoes and eggs.

For the 40th anniversary of the stage, Maffay recorded the album Tattoos , which apart from a sangeless intro and the song We disappear, contains new recordings of his greatest hits. The new versions were created with the support of the Wroclaw Score Orchestra . With tattoos , Peter Maffay came to number 1 in the album charts for the 14th time, making him the record holder in Germany. It was his 41st album in the charts; the previous albums were in the German album charts for over 1000 weeks, including Tabaluga and the signs of the times . In 2011 he recorded a new edition of his hit Nessaja with Bushido and Sido for their album 23 with Growing up.

So far, 13 of his albums have sold over a million times, 19 of his albums reached number one in the album charts, both of which are the highest number of any artist in Germany. Maffay sold a total of almost 50 million records (as of 2012). Some of his tours had over 700,000 visitors per tour.

The keyboards were mainly played by Jean-Jacques Kravetz , whose son Pascal Kravetz played live for the first time in 1988. Between 1980 and 1985 Thomas Glanz was also active as keyboard player for Maffay , from 1986 to 1988 the arranger and composer Tony Carey .

The most important and most influential guitarist was Frank Diez , founding member of the Peter Maffay Band and from 1974 to 2004 a congenial collaborator and creative partner of Peter Maffay.

Occasionally wind instruments appeared in the Maffay arrangement, such as the saxophonist Eddie Taylor (until 1997). John Smith (saxophone) and Steve Howard (trumpet) have been with the band regularly since 2001. The saxophonist Everette Harp has been involved in recordings and live concerts since 2014.
