The Otmar-Alt-Stiftung is a foundation based in Hamm and was on 11 December 1991 by the artist Otmar Alt launched to young, talented artists in the field of visual and performing arts , the music and the literature to promote . The beginning of the professional life should be made easier for the young artists and given a suitable forum for the presentation of their own works.

Foundation purpose

For this purpose, his entire artistic life's work has flowed into the foundation and is therefore accessible to the general public on the foundation's premises in Norddinker near Hamm in Westphalia.

The foundation promotes young talent from the fields of visual arts, music, literature and creative art by awarding half-yearly grants and by providing a forum for the presentation of their works. A sponsorship prize is awarded, and the foundation works on the work of Otmar Alt in an art-scientific way. The area is made available for cultural events.

Terrain and structures

The area already covers 10,000 square meters with a historic rural property from the 17th century, which has been restored and expanded in style. Here atelier and lounges were created for scholarship holders and an opportunity for art-historical processing of Otmar Alt's works. A large garden with sculptures by numerous artists, an amphitheater and a pond complete the overall picture.

Culture award

Since 2002, the Otmar Alt Foundation has been awarding the cultural prize every two years to people who have done a great deal of work for the common good. Associated with this sponsorship award is prize money that must go to a charitable cause.

Previous winners are the pianist Marjana Plotkina (née Lisnyk), the Bremen Musical Company (2004), Peter Maffay (2007), Alfred Biolek (2010), Volker Schlöndorff (2012) and Leonard Lansink (2014).

reception

Allegedly because of "financial bottlenecks" on the part of the foundation, there should be no scholarship holders in 2013, and no culture prize was awarded either. The fact that no scholarship was awarded is said to have been due to the lack of a suitable candidate and the culture prize is only awarded every two years. In 2014 Leonard Lansink received a scholarship and the culture prize again .

Because of the financial problems and the decline in the number of members (from well over 1,000 to around 500), the foundation's board of directors was considering changing the statutes in order to orientate itself culturally somewhat differently. One focus should be placed on the acquisition of new members. A change to the statutes was rejected by the foundation advisory board.
