The Geilebach , also (the) Geile , in the middle course Döllbach or (the) Döll , in the lower reaches of Mombach and formerly called Geilhäuser Wasser , is an 8.5 km long, western and orographically right tributary of the Ahna (in the upper course called Ahne ) in the independent city of Kassel in northern Hesse .

geography

course

Source:
The flowing water rises as the Geilebach in the northeast part of the Hohen Habichtswald on the slopes of Hühnerberg ( 496  m above sea  level ) and Wurmberg ( 485  m ) in the forest area belonging to Kassel- Harleshausen . Be in the nature Park Habichtswald befindliches source area is situated in the context of two ponds (about  340  m ) below the north-northeast Blue Lake (about  362  m ) and south of the conical hole (about  342  m ); Both are open- cast lakes created after the completion of basalt mining . The forest path overpass at the lower pond, under which the near source Geilebach flows, is at an altitude of 339  m .

Upper run:
Initially Geilebach said stream flows exclusively in eastern directions: After leaving the Habichtswald in passing under the Rasenallee ( 293.4  m ) extending Bach along the southern border of the Ostausläufers the natural park Habichtswald extending from the Rasenallee over the bach distant Firnskuppe ( 313.9  m ), the Fuchsküppel (approx.  285  m ) and the Daspel parcel , both located near the
stream , all the way to Lambert (approx.  292.5  m ) far from the stream . Below the lawn avenue , it passes the western residential areas of the Kassel district of Harleshausen to the north, where it flows through agricultural areas. A street there a little north of the brook is called Am Geilebach and a little beyond it, agricultural areas are called (Das) Geilhäuser Feld ; Geilhausen ( desert ) once lay there . The short inlet Eschebergstraße joins near the southernmost point of the street Am Hilgenberg . Thereafter passes under the stream, immediately after run in the outfall Geilebach that Wolfhager road ( national road 251 ; ca.  230  m ), and the other side of the road of the Harleshäuser opens into the sewer directly east below the parking pool (outdoor) of the hard trench (cooker trench) a .

Immediately afterwards, the Geilebach passes the swimming pool in the sewer system in the south, and then flows through the built-up areas of Harleshausen. Among other things, the Kubergraben joins , after which the stream crosses under Obervellmarer Straße (approx.  209  m ). Here he finally leaves the Habichtswald Nature Park. After passing the Harleshausen cemetery, the stream forms in the field camp , where the Steinstücker Graben joins a little to the west above the road to the field camp , and to the Kassel repair shop of Deutsche Bahn, the border between the Kassel districts of Harleshausen and Jungfernkopf . On this border it flows through the 30.15 m long Geilebach tunnel (approx.  182  m ), which leads through an embankment on the Harleshausen curve belonging to the Kassel – Warburg railway line . Below the tunnel, the stream meanders to this DB plant on the district boundary on a flow distance of about 650 m below the Rothenberg ( 207.3  m ), through a natural depression, lined with a small forest in the lower part . He passes the eco-settlement to the north by the street Am Wasserturm . After that, the stream runs in a tunnel channeling just over 500  meters long (approx.  175  m ) under the DB plant and, for example, under the high-speed line Hanover – Kassel – Würzburg .

Middle course:
In its middle course, beyond or to the east of the DB plant, where the Geilebach passes the
Mercedes-Benz plant in Kassel located in the Mittelfeld industrial park to the south, the flowing water in Rothenditmold is called Döllbach ( Döll ). In this district of Kassel, it flows by passing under the 100 m-long bridge of Gelnhäuser road below the small Rothenbergs (after Rothenditmolder local situation usually only Rothenberg called; 192.6  m ) on which the Marienkrankenhaus Kassel is, by the narrow Döllbachaue from which the lower part was renatured from 2006 to 2008 and to which the Rothenbergpark connects to the north, near the brook . After crossing under the last-mentioned street near the junction ( 157.7  m ) of Mombachstrasse from Wolfhager Strasse , the stream flows north along Mombachstrasse in the direction of Schöfferhofstrasse , between the two streets a little before the approximately 100 m long bridge (crosses both streets ) of Wolfhager Strasse to finally disappear into a tunnel canalization.

Lower course:
In this tunnel canalization, the Döllbach runs under the district of North Holland ( Nordstadt ). In the tunnel opens directly after the bridge of Wolfhager street in the sewers under the confluence ( 156.3  m ) of Schöfferhofstraße in the Mombachstraße the last coming from the west and previously flowing in the sewer Angerbach (in the upper reaches of death houses ditch called) a.

From the Angersbach confluence on, the stream is called Mombach . As such, it flows in the sewer system between Kassel main cemetery in the north and Kassel Lower City Station in the south, always along Mombachstrasse . In the sewer system he passes under the intersection ( 149.6  m ) of Mombachstrasse and Holländische Strasse (federal roads 7 and 83 that run together ) at Henner-Piffendeckel -Platz, where the Philipp-Scheidemann -Haus is located.

Estuary:
After the Mombach, which flows in its approximately 1.5 km long tunnel canalisation , has passed the Elisabeth Knipping School on
Mombachstrasse and the Schlachthof cultural center , it flows into the border between the districts of North Holland and Fasanenhof at the southeast corner of the small one Nordstadtpark located at the lower end of Mombachstrasse at about 140  m height in the Ahna . The inscription 1908 can be read on the tunnel portal there , and the Kassel Clinic is located east above the mouth in Fasanenhof .

Natural allocation

The Geilebach rises in the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34) and its main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) in the subunit Habichtswald (with Langenberg) (342.0), after which it becomes the main unit West Hessian Depression (343) before leaving the forest area close to the source in which it flows through the subunit Kassel Basin (343.3) to its confluence with the Ahna .

Protected areas

The Geilebach rises in the fauna-flora-habitat area Habichtswald and Seilerberg near Ehlen (FFH no. 4622-302; 29.1936  km² in size), which it leaves when crossing under the lawn avenue . From now on it runs for the most part in the landscape protection area (LSG) city of Kassel ( CDDA no. 378517; designated 1995; 19.8386 km²). Short stretches of stream in the sewer system at the Harleshausen swimming pool, in the tunnel of the Kassel – Warburg railway line and in the sewer system of the above-mentioned DB plant with the Hanover – Kassel – Würzburg high-speed line there and its rather long section in the Mombachstrasse sewer system are outside the LSG; its mouth is in the LSG.

Geilebach tunnel

The Geilebach Tunnel was built until 1847 during the construction of the section of the Kassel – Warburg railway between Kassel and Grebenstein , which was completed on August 18, 1848 and which shares a long section with the 2550 Aachen – Kassel line (km 340.809). It lies on the border of the Harleshausen and Jungfernkopf districts. The vaulted tunnel consists of natural stone abutments as well as a natural and brick vault; it is 30.15 m long and the span is 3.46 m.  The Geilebach flows through it - a little below the camp at a height of around 182  m through a dam on the Harleshausen curve . In addition to its function as a railway overpass and brook passage, the tunnel serves as a passage for pedestrians and cyclists. The next possibilities to cross the railway line are the bridge overpass ( 201  m ) of Wolfhager Straße (B 251) at Harleshausen station (southwest) towards the city and the bridge underpass ( 190  m ) of the Waldecker branching off from Schenkebier Stanne Street at the Regiotram stop Jungfernkopf (northeast).

In 2009 the floor area of the tunnel was rebuilt by the Kassel Drainage Company (KEB; today: Kasselwasser ; municipal water and sewage company) for 34,000 €: In the tunnel, the old large stone paving stones of the path, which were often slippery in damp or wet weather, were replaced with new concrete composite stones were exchanged, the path was widened and a railing was installed next to the creek tube, which was then moved from the center of the tunnel to its northeast side. In addition, a traffic light was attached to each of the tunnel portals, which shows a red light in the event of flooding in order to forbid entering the tunnel.

The German Railways (DB) had originally announced plans to redevelop the tunnel from 2016 located in their property, for which were provided € 900,000. The use of the footpath and bike path is regulated by a license agreement between DB and the city of Kassel. If it is not possible to keep the underpass at this point because the dilapidated tunnel is being converted into a piping passage for the stream, a bridge or tunnel in the immediate vicinity is conceivable. A later estimate of € 940,000 was made for the tunnel renovation. It has been postponed to 2018 for the time being. However, work did not begin until summer 2019 and, according to DB information, should last until February 2020. The tunnel passage has been completely closed since the renovation began. The floor area, which was only converted in 2009, was torn out. The tunnel received - each new from reinforced concrete - a self-supporting inner shell and portal elements; the paving stone path in the tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists was restored and the section of the stream in the tunnel was given a box-like channel made of reinforced concrete that is open at the top. Those from Kasselwasser were involved in the work of the DB: the mixed water sewer located under the tunnel for waste water disposal was renewed. The construction site barriers were removed on May 4, 2020, and the tunnel has officially reopened since then.

Renaturation

Since September 4, 2014, a section of the Geilebach in the field camp along the border of the Kassel districts of Harleshausen and Jungfernkopf in the section between the streets Steinstückerweg and Zum Feldlager has been renatured over a length of slightly more than 400 m ; the work, which had been in the planning stage since 2011, was carried out by the Kasselwasser company. In this section, the bed of the stream was paved in the 1970s, and the stream received cascade falls made of concrete segments and grass pavers, which in the last few decades were only used as under-washed bank reinforcement in many places.

As part of the near-natural redesign, the biological continuity and the ability to develop dynamically were restored and the stream was connected to its floodplain landscape. The construction work promotes the future development of a diversely structured river bed, reduces the entry of pollutants and sediments from the water environment by moving away from agricultural areas and creating buffer strips and promotes the vegetation typical of the floodplain and the development of species-rich flora and fauna typical of the water body. A stream branching with two arms was created over a length of almost 250 m: the river bed in the north arm was made flat and wide, and in the south arm, terrain hollows were formed for the development of permanent still waters. In addition, a new pedestrian and cycle path bridge was built in the field camp on Steinstückerweg .

The stream renaturation was made possible by means of compensation due to road construction measures that resulted from negotiations between the (former) KEB and the Office for Roads and Transport in Kassel. Because of the expansion of the federal motorway 44 far from the stream , compensatory measures in the nature conservation area have to take place, so that the renovation project on Geilebach came about.

The construction work, worth around 300,000  , was completed by Christmas 2014.
