The Habichtswald Nature Park is a 474.28 km² nature park in the Kassel district , in the area of ​​the independent city of Kassel and in the Schwalm-Eder district , northern Hesse ( Germany ).

The nature park, founded in 1962, stretches particularly west of the city of Kassel and contains the low mountain range Habichtswälder Bergland (mostly just called Habichtswald ), the north-easternmost mountain range of the West Hessian mountains . It is internationally known for the Wilhelmshöhe mountain park located in it. Numerous castles and palaces, some of which have only survived as ruins, are also of cultural historical significance.

The landscape of the Habichtswald nature park slopes down towards the north towards the Diemel valley. In the northeast it abuts the treeless and elongated ridge, the north of the city to Kassel between Vellmar and Fuldatal rises -Ihringshausen and to the east in the Weserbergland belonging Reinhardswald passes. The Kassel Basin connects to the east , behind which the Kaufunger Forest rises. In the southeast, the parkland meets the unwooded and elongated ridge between Kassel and Baunatal , which leads from the nature park to the Fulda valley ; on the other side and thus to the east of this river valley rise the Söhre and the Kaufung forest. In the south and southwest the landscape slopes down into the Eder valley; beyond that is the Kellerwald . In the latter direction and to the west, the park area is joined by the Waldecker Land and the Lange Wald .

The Habichtswald Nature Park comprises the actual Habichtswälder Bergland, a wooded low mountain range that connects to the west of Kassel. Just a little southwest of this city and directly south of Schauenburg, the equally heavily wooded Langenberge tower in the park area . Further south it also contains the mountainous landscape around Bad Emstal and in the west the much flatter “city forests” between Naumburg and Wolfhagen . In the north the nature park extends over the communities Habichtswald and Zierenberg , where the Große Bärenberg and the Hohe Dörnberg rise up to Breuna . Habichtswald Nature Park Center

The Habichtswald Nature Park Center is a visitor and information center on Hohen Dörnberg , which was opened on August 9, 2009 below the Helfenstein in the area of ​​the former Dörnberg youth farm . Railway: The Kassel – Warburg railway line runs from Kassel main station with stops in the Kassel districts of Kirchditmold and Harleshausen to Vellmar . In Kassel, near the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe train station, the 33.4 km long Kassel – Naumburg railway (popularly known as the Naumburger Kleinbahn ) begins , on which the Hessencourrier runs, a museum railway that runs through Baunatal to the southern part of the park and through the communities of Schauenburg and Bad Emstal and through the city of Naumburg .
