geography

Oberelsungen is located on the upper reaches of the Duse, a small south-eastern tributary of the Erpe , almost 19 km (as the crow flies ) west-north-west of Kassel in the Habichtswald Nature Park at the western foot of the mountains Kleiner Gudenberg ( 531  m ) and Großer Gudenberg ( 569  m ), the northern foothills of the 599  m high Great Bear Mountain are.

history

In the year 775 AD Oberelsungen, then called "Elisungun", was first mentioned in the records - Breviarium Sancti Lulli - of the Hersfeld monastery . (The neighboring town of Niederelsungen , a district of the city of Wolfhagen , can also be associated with this mention.)

On April 3, 1945, Battery B of the 881st Field Artillery Regiment of the US Army reached Oberelsungen.

Since February 1st, 1971 Oberelsungen has been part of the town of Zierenberg, 5 km away .

religion

A church is mentioned in 1594; a previous building was probably at the highest point on the church square. In 1640 it burned down completely after a lightning strike. In 1661 the church tower was built. After this church became too small for the increasing population and also dilapidated, it was demolished. On June 18, 1798, construction began on today's church, which was completed in 1799.

Regular events

The "Salatkirmes" fair takes place on the first full weekend in July each year.
