Niederelsungen is a district of the city of Wolfhagen in the northern Hessian district of Kassel . It is located in a valley, about 1 kilometer south of the federal highway 44 exit Breuna and about 7 km north-northeast of the city center.

history

775 is the first documentary mention as "Elisungun". This goes back to a list of goods from the Hersfeld monastery . However, this mention did not differentiate between Nieder- and Oberelsungen . It remains open which Elsungen is meant, since a more precise definition is missing. However, the indications point to a "district Elsungen" with the "Saxon" Niederelsungen and the "Franconian" Oberelsungen, which still differ today in the architectural style of old farms. One reason could be that the border between Franconia and Saxony , or between the Franconian and Saxon Hessengau, ran through the Wolfhager Land.

Duke Eberhard von Franken received Elsungen through an exchange with the Fulda Monastery . In 965 the Magdeburg Moritzstift received the royal court of Rösebeck from Emperor Otto I and came into the possession of Elsungen. In 1261 the name "Nitherenelsingen" was first found in a Westphalian directory.

In 1306 the Hessian landgraves each received half of both places as a Mainz fief, the other half was given to the lords of Calenberg. The villages and courts of Nieder- and Oberelsungen belonged to Schartenberg Castle . Monasteries in the region such as Volkhardinghausen , Ahnaberg , Weißenstein , Hasungen and Eppenberg also had property or income in Niederelsungen. The lords of Malsburg , the lords of Twiste and the lords of Ehringen also had possessions ; however, their influence was of little consequence.

In 1457 half of the ownership of the Rave (raven) von Calenberg was bought by Heinrich V von Gudenberg from the von Gudenberg family . In 1464 the Hessian landgrave enfeoffed the Lords of Stockhausen with his half; Heinrich von Gudenberg also received this fief in 1471. After the Gudenbergs died out in 1534, the Lords of Schartenberg received the fief. In 1594, Hesse acquired three quarters of the property of the Lords of Schartenberg and gave the remaining quarter to the Lords of Malsburg .

On February 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Niederelsungen was incorporated into the city of Wolfhagen as part of the regional reform in Hesse .
