Philippinenburg and -thal are a district of Wolfhagen in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

Geographical location

Philippinenburg ( ) and Philippinenthal ( ) are located in the Habichtswald Nature Park about 3 km east of the Wolfhag core city on the northern slope of the massive Isthaberg ( 523.1  m ) between about 335 and 275  m above sea level. NHN ; on average, Philippinenburg is around 319  m above sea level and the Philippinenthal, around 800 m north of it, is around 278  m above sea level.

Between the two villages is the Helfenberg ( 366.2  m ) with the Helfenberg castle ruins and a little to the west of the Ofenberg ( 372.5  m ) with the Ofenberg tower . Philippinenthal is passed to the north of the approximately 4 km long Lohbach , a tributary of the Erpe on the left . The two villages are connected by the district roads  102 (coming from the Wolfhagen core town) and 103.

history

With the approval of March 23, 1778 by the Hessian Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel , the small colonies Philippinenburg and Philippinenthal as well as Philippinendorf (now part of Gasterfeld ) were created as part of his settlement policy by settlers from the Darmstadt area . They were named after Friedrich II's wife Philippine von Brandenburg-Schwedt .

Philippines castle was built in the area of the 14th century fallen desolate place Hildegersen and in the country of deserted Höllehof. Philippinenthal arose in the area of ​​the deserted places Odelsen and Elriksen .

Events and sports

In addition to various festivities, the “Almabtrieb” from the higher-lying meadows in the Habichtswald Nature Park to the village is considered a highlight in Wolfhager Land at the beginning of October.

The Philippinenburg / -thal tug-of-war group founded in 1982 has achieved numerous successes in national and international competitions over the years.
