The Kassel – Naumburg line is a branch line in Hesse . Today it is operated by the Hessische Landesbahn GmbH .

history

The line was built by the Kassel-Naumburg Railway (KNE). The standard gauge 33.4 km long line ran from the station Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Kleinbahnhof from October 29, 1903 to Schauenburg - Elgershausen and from March 31, 1904 to the Naumburg train station (Bz Kassel) . In 1966, the KNE became part of the Hessian State Railway .

At the end of 2005, the route was taken over by the Frankfurt-Königsteiner Eisenbahn AG, which now operates as HLB Basis AG and represents the railway infrastructure company of the Hessian State Railway .

The KNE trains began and ended on May 31, 1970 in Kassel's main train station . Passenger traffic on the main line was stopped on September 4, 1977. The freight west of Baunatal - Altenbauna ended May 31, 1991. On the remaining section is an active freight on the VW factory Baunatal performed. In addition, Regionalbahn Kassel GmbH in Baunatal uses part of the route to Großenritte for a tram line .

The route from Wilhelmshöhe to Naumburg has been used by a museum railway since 1972 , which the Verein Hessencourrier e. V. operates. Until 2007, it was located in the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Süd train station . However, the station had to give way to a workshop for cantus . For this reason, a new Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Hessencourrier station was built in the immediate vicinity, from which steam trains have been departing since 2007.

In order to prevent the impending closure of the section from Großenritte to Naumburg, an association had to lease the route. The Hessencourrier e. V. founded the Association Regionalmuseum Naumburger Kleinbahn e. In March 1992 together with the district of Kassel , the cities of Naumburg and Baunatal and the communities of Bad Emstal and Schauenburg. V. (RMN). Thanks to the membership fees and the great personal commitment of the club members, operations on the Grossenritte – Naumburg section have been maintained so far.

Freight transport

Since January 1, 2015, freight traffic to Baunatal is no longer carried out by HLB Basis , but by DB Cargo .

Tram traffic since 1995

Based on the model of the so-called “ Karlsruhe Model ”, the Kassel tram has been running on a section of the route since 1995 . The trams coming from the city center merge south of Altenbauna station into the railway line and run on it to Großenritte station . In this context, the intermediate stops at Altenbauna Kleingartenverein, Altenbauna Stadtmitte, Altenbauna Albert-Einstein-Straße and Großenritte Hünstein have also been newly established. In this area, the trams do not run according to the ordinance on the construction and operation of trams (BOStrab), but according to the railway building and operating regulations (EBO). Two small halls were built in Großenritte, in which railway and tram vehicles are parked. Tram lines 2 and 5 run on the route (only for work and school trips). Analogous to the Kassel – Waldkappel line, the Kassel – Naumburg line is also served by tram vehicles in tram-train mode, but is not included in the system of nach RegioTram Kassel operated according to the same concept integrated.

future

In December 2012 it was announced that the city of Baunatal is examining whether a RegioTram connection between the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe train station , the Baunatal ZOB and the Schauenburg district of Elgershausen would be worthwhile, as the discontinuation of bus route 58 means that the connection to Baunatal and thus to many Medical centers has gotten worse.

A study by Hessen Mobil from 2017 gave a good chance of reactivation. As of July 2018, a feasibility study for reactivating the route ("Kassel - Baunatal - Schauenburg - Naumburg") is in progress. In January 2019, the North Hessian Transport Association announced that it was not aiming for reactivation between Baunatal-Großenritte and Naumburg. The reasons given were the investment costs and the peripheral location of the stations.

As a result of the feasibility study, a connection between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Baunatal-Großenritte with Regiotram vehicles and diesel railcars with a travel time of around 13 minutes is basically conceivable. Further variants (such as a connection to Schauenburg-Hoof) and numerous details are still being investigated.
