Geology and history

The Baunsberg, which consists mainly of basalt , is of volcanic origin.

On the middle hilltop there is a ring wall with remains of a castle moat , which represent prehistoric evidence of an abandoned castle and are designated as a cultural monument ; its inner area is at a height of 409.3  m and the highest rampart at 413.4  m , which corresponds to the highest, although artificial, mountain site.

On the middle dome was from Kassel Verschönerungsverein the stone as a viewing platform with shelter serving Rondelchen built and inaugurated on July 17, 1897th For decades it was - above the quarry (see following paragraph) - a popular destination for walkers and hikers. Vandalism and weathering turned the Rondelchen into a ruin, which was demolished in the 1980s due to the risk of collapse.

Until the time before the Second World War (1939–1945), basalt was mined east of the central knoll ; the abandoned quarry is overgrown with trees. As a result of this war, an underground air raid shelter was built in the southern part of the mountain from the beginning of the 1940s to protect the Baunatal population, but it was used during the war and could be reached from the entrances on today's streets Am Brehmenacker and Am Fuchsberg .

The Baunsberg, which belonged to Kassel until December 31, 1963, became the property of the newly founded municipality of Baunatal on January 1, 1964 as part of a regional reform on January 1, 1966, which became a town on July 1, 1966.

Nowadays the Baunsberg is mainly made up of mixed forest belonging to the Kassel state forest .

Traffic and walking

The federal motorway 44 leads north past the Baunsberg with the Kassel-Bad Wilhelmshöhe junction , which is located a little northwest of the mountain directly on the state road  3215 (former federal road 520 ). A little southwest of the bridge on which the L 3215 leads over the A 44 is the Baunsberg hikers' car park . There is a circular hiking trail around the mountain, which is used by walkers and hikers as well as joggers. Side paths and paths branch off from this path, through which one can get to the mountain tops. There is a fitness trail on the south-eastern mountain area. There are other travel and access options with parking spaces on the streets of Baunatal residential areas.
