Großenritte is the second largest district of Baunatal in the district of Kassel in North Hesse (Germany) with 7,889 inhabitants (2019) spread over an area of 13.2 km².

Geographical location

Großenritte is located in the west of the Baunatal on the southeast edge of the Habichtswald Nature Park . The Leisel , a western tributary of the Bauna, flows through it . Landesstraße  3219 runs north of the district, L 3218 to the west and Kreisstraße  22 to the east .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 775. In 1330, Landgrave Heinrich enfeoffed the knight Johann Riedesel with goods for "Grosin-Ritte" (large rides) and in "Wenigen Ritte" (old rides).

An unmistakable testimony to the pre-Christian settlement is the Hünstein in Großenritte, a 2.50 meter high menhir made of quartzite , the oldest cultural monument in the Baunatal. It can be compared to the menhir standing near Hertingshausen . Standing upright in a field until 1911, it was sunk by the owner of the field because of his shy horses, dug up again in 1932 by Wilhelm Jordan and set up again not far from the site. In the immediate vicinity, Iron Age shards, an amber pearl and a fragment of a stone ax were discovered during the excavations .
