About this picture

Baunatal (named after the Fulda - tributary Bauna ) is a medium-sized town in northern Hesse Kassel district . It was created on January 1, 1964 through the amalgamation of the formerly independent communities Altenbauna , Altenritte , Grossenritte and Kirchbauna as a result of the establishment of a Volkswagen AG plant in Altenbauna in 1957. The villages Hertingshausen , Rengershausen and Guntershausen were added later.

geography

Geographical location

Baunatal seen from the castle hill.

The city is located immediately south of Kassel and west of the Fulda valley . The west and northwest of the municipality merge into the Habichtswälder Bergland ( Habichtswald Nature Park ) with the Langenberg ridge (west) and the Baunsberg ( 413.4  m above sea  level ) in the north, a southern branch of the Hohen Habichtswald , on its west, south - and east slopes the inhabited districts spread. From northwest to southeast the city area is traversed by the eponymous Bauna, which in the Guntershausen district flows from the left into the Fulda coming from the south. In the Baunatal urban area, the Lützel and Leisel flow into the Bauna from the west. About northwest of the Altenritte district is the Schefferfeld polder on the Bauna for urban flood protection .

Neighboring communities

Baunatal borders in the north on the community of Schauenburg (district of Kassel) and the independent city of Kassel , in the east on the community of Fuldabrück (district of Kassel), in the southeast on the community of Guxhagen , and in the south on the community of Edermünde and in the west on the small town of Niedenstein ( all three in the Schwalm-Eder district ).

history

North facade of the Volkswagen factory between Baunsberg and Knallhütte

The Volkswagen factory in Kassel settled in 1957 on the former site of Henschel Flugmotorenbau GmbH in what is now Altenbauna . Volkswagen began production as early as 1959, and a year later, over 6,000 people were working in the new VW plant.

Due to this rapid development in the Altenbauna community, it was important to enter into new partnerships, as the settlement of the works also resulted in an increased influx of people. This meant that an appropriate residential infrastructure had to be created. Thus, through the merger of the formerly independent communities Altenbauna , Altenritte and Kirchbauna on January 1, 1964, the former community of Baunatal was created.

On July 1, 1966, the communities of Baunatal and Grossenritte merged. The Hessian state government granted this newly formed municipality city rights. The certificate was presented by Heinrich Schneider , then Minister of the Interior of Hesse . The city of Baunatal was born. Horst Werner became the first mayor. At that time, the “new” town of Baunatal already had 11,705 inhabitants. At this point in time, over 13,400 people were already working in the VW plant .

On October 1, 1971 , the municipality of Hertingshausen joined the city of Baunatal as part of the regional reform in Hesse . On August 1, 1972, the municipality of Buchenhagen followed by state law , which was created on September 1, 1970 through the merger of the formerly independent municipalities of Guntershausen and Rengershausen . The town of Baunatal now had 19,300 inhabitants.

Baunatal is currently a town with 27,755 inhabitants.
