The municipality of Vellmar was formed on July 1, 1967 through the merger of the municipalities of Frommershausen and Niedervellmar. The town charter was granted on August 30, 1975 on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary. At the time, it was the youngest town in the Kassel district, together with Baunatal . At the same time and well into the mid-1980s, the city center with the town hall, shops, the medical center and the residential area "Musikerviertel" were built. The construction area on Osterberg (mostly completed) and the industrial area “An der Kämperbrücke” are currently being developed.
Territorial reform
On December 1, 1970 , as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent municipalities of Vellmar and Obervellmar voluntarily merged to form the expanded municipality of "Vellmar".
