history

For the 2nd millennium BC The ritual use of the giant stone on the Heiligenberg proves the early settlement of the area.

Naumburg was first mentioned in a document in 1170. The castle Naumburg , Nuwenburc , although mentioned in the sources until 1182, but was probably already built in the early 12th century by the local noble family of the von Naumburg, probably on the near Weidelsburg sat. In 1260 the place received city rights. Six years later, in 1266, the noble free (vir nobilis) Wittekind von Naumburg , canon in Magdeburg and canon in Halberstadt , with the consent of his nephews, sold the castle in Naumburg, the Weidelsburg and the Elben court pledged to the Naumburgers by the Landgraves of Hesse ("Hagebuche") to Archbishop Werner von Mainz. Apart from a long-term pledge to the Counts of Waldeck in the 16th century, the small farming town remained in the possession of the Archbishopric of Mainz until 1802 . As a result, after the Reformation introduced in the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1526, the city became a Catholic enclave in Protestant Hesse. The area around today's Elbenberg and the old Elberberg Castle were also church property until the 15th century; they belonged to the monastery of St. Alban in front of Mainz , which the Lords of Elben appointed as governors in the Elber Mark .

In 1626 a fire destroyed the castle, which has remained in ruins ever since.

As a result of Reichsdeputationshauptschluss circuit from 1803 Naumburg was with the other former kurmainzischen enclaves Fritzlar , Amöneburg and Neustadt to Principality Fritzlar combined and the Hesse-Kassel under the Elector raised William I of Hesse-Kassel incorporated. In the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) Naumburg was the administrative seat of the canton of Naumburg . With the annexation of the Electorate of Hesse by Prussia in 1866, Naumburg also became Prussian.

At the beginning of the 19th century, most of the residents were employed in agriculture. In the 20th century, the Volkswagen plant in Baunatal , small businesses and service companies as well as the tourism industry became preferred employers. Naumburg takes part in several nature and environmental protection projects in the region and was awarded the Environment and Tourism Prize in 1997 by the German government .

  • The streets of the historic old town have well-preserved half-timbered ensembles from the late 17th century.
  • The Catholic parish church of St. Crescentius is a three-aisled Gothic basilica that was started in the 14th century. The nave was expanded in 1420/30 and the west tower completed in 1512. After the great city fire of 1684, large parts of the building had to be renewed. A Gothic sandstone statue of the Madonna from around 1340, the Naumburg Madonna , which once stood on the southern facade, is now inside the church; a copy is in the original place on the facade. The rest of the furnishings in neo-Gothic style come from the late 19th century; the choir screens and the two outer choir windows date from 1897. The central choir window, which was renewed in 1991, depicts Christ as judge of the world in the mandorla in bright colors .
